Green Seattle: Friends of The Burke-Gilman Trail at Sand Point

  • Environment & Animals

Who We Are

Our mission is to reclaim, to restore to native plants, and to preserve the Sand Point section of Seattle's Longest Park - The Burke Gilman! We are removing invasive plants along the Burke Gilman Trail and the replanting with native trees, shrubs and plants. Friends of the Burke Gilman at Sand Point is now ten years old. We have currently restored and replanted almost three miles of trail from 30rd Ave NE to NE 77th st. For the last five years we average over 2000 volunteers of which 500 are youth. We typically plant 1600 trees, 3500 shrubs and 2800 understory plants per year. We also work with neighboring schools to provide education on restoration ecology and a bird walk to see native fauna.

What We Do

Friends of the Burke Gilman at Sand Point is an all volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to restoration of the Burke Gilman Trail. Friends of Burke Gilman Trail at Sandpoint works under the auspices of the Green Seattle Partnership. Green Seattle Partnership is a partnership of the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation and Cascade Land Conservancy. It is dedicated to clearing 2500 acres of Seattle Parks of noxious and non-native invasive plants and replacing them with native trees and shrubs. This is in part to replace many of our parks? dying or diseased trees, and to reforest many areas that have already lost their tree cover. Green Seattle Partnership works with Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation and Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment.
