Green Seattle: Me-kwa-mooks Habitat Restoration

We are Native Plant forest stewards and volunteers healing and expanding native habitat of Me-Kwa-Mooks' forest and wetlands. The long term vision is to revive indigenous biodiverse wildlife habitat that existed before the Denny party arrived (nearby in Alki) in Seattle in 1851. This will provide both habitat for indigenous species and opportunity for people to be experience wilderness connection.

Green Seattle Partnership is a Parks-Forterra collaboration to restore natural areas. GSP forest stewards use Washington Native Plant Society trailing and follow Restoration Ecology methodology and best practices. Me-Kwa-Mooks stewards are inspired by and apply the facilitated ecosystem recovery approach to our restoration efforts.

Forest stewards organize volunteer work parties to remove invasive plant species and replace them with native plants, shrubs and conifer trees, and utilize a variety of methods to assist thriving forest health. We work closely with the Seattle Parks Natural Area specialists. Since December of 2014 we have been restoring multiple sites in 20 acres of minimally developed natural area: including wetlands, shady deciduous and conifer woodlands, sunny meadows with amazing views looking west over the Puget Sound to the Olympic Mountains.
