Who We Are

Our mission is to enable older residents of Central Seattle to participate in an inter-generational community that shares knowledge, experience and services with each other so living is easier and more joyful.

We do this by providing, vetting, and recommending resources so adults can remain in their own homes for as long as they choose. We offer members a harmonious blend of health and in-home services, shared social and cultural activities, and community engagement, all designed to foster belonging, security and contribution.

Inspired by the success stories of so-called "virtual villages" springing up on both coasts, a group of community activists and professionals in the field of aging gathered to investigate. The intention to build a new community seemed an ideal response to growing interest in aging at home. Now in our second year of operation, we have more than 70 members who pay an annual fee based on ability to pay.

We are a virtual village of members living in their own homes in Central Seattle. The "village" is not a place; rather, it's a concept for a way of life.

What We Do

Wider Horizons members believe in building support networks so they can age in their own homes as long as they wish. They live independent lives by tapping into the give-and-take of strong communities.

As we age, certain tasks become more difficult and can slow our neighborhood involvement. Wider Horizons aims to bolster and replace connections that can get fragile or lost.

Led by active people who cannot imagine wanting to move from the homes they love just because they are old, these villages are a viable alternative to leaving one?s community of choice. Wider Horizons helps many elders to live in community with the support of peers, professionals, and community volunteers.

Want to stop driving at night? We'll offer a lift to our meetings. Did your book group fold up? We have a book group here in the village. Would you rather spend quality time with your granddaughter instead of asking her to program your new phone? Our volunteer techies can program it for you. How about rides to the airport, backup for dog sitters, group trips to Costco? One of our members is giving us run of her back yard to grow food and others have pitched in to make a vegetable garden happen. If gardening is your thing, consider joining.
