Who We Are

Our mission is to engage the community to create a healthy, peaceful, and sustainable world. We envision a world where all live healthy lives free from the threats of nuclear war, global climate catastrophe, and injustice. WPSR was founded in 1979 by physicians who recognized the enormous threat to health posed by nuclear weapons. There is no cure for nuclear war; there is only prevention. WPSR is the Washington state chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR). Physicians for Social Responsibility has been working for more than 50 years to create a healthy, just, and peaceful world for both the present and future generations. PSR is the U.S. affiliate of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. IPPNW is a non-partisan federation of national medical groups in 64 countries, representing tens of thousands of doctors, medical students, other health workers, and concerned citizens who share the common goal of creating a more peaceful and secure world freed from the threat of nuclear annihilation. IPPNW received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985.

What We Do

WPSR is the active conscience of medicine in Washington State. We advocate for policies to protect public health from the gravest threats, including nuclear weapons, climate change, and economic inequity. Our organization is open to all persons, though we particularly seek to activate and elevate the voices of health professionals. Our nuclear weapons abolition program seeks to eliminate nuclear weapons worldwide and to champion policies to prevent nuclear war. We are the primary convener of Washington Against Nuclear Weapons, a statewide coalition of 40 organizations who educate and lobby together on nuclear issues. Our climate and health program strives toward a future where the relationship between climate and human health is unconditionally acknowledged, where climate conditions have stabilized such that ecological balance and the survival of the human species is no longer threatened by anthropogenic atmospheric degradation. We support local, state, and national policies that promote clean energy and reduce pollution. WPSR's economic inequity and health program seeks to make Washington the healthiest state in the U.S. by championing policies that alleviate economic inequity and its resulting health consequences. Our work focuses on improving tax policies in WA State, eliminating homelessness, promoting harm reduction strategies, and investing in early life.
