Who We Are

Our Mission: To improve climate, health and equity by accelerating the switch from gasoline vehicles to clean, zero-emission alternatives. Our goal is to end the gasoline era by spurring adoption of clean mobility and phasing out sales of new gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2030. Coltura’s vision is that no new gasoline-powered vehicles are sold after 2030, and the United States is gasoline-free by 2040. To achieve this vision, Coltura is building the no-gasoline movement to change policy and culture around gasoline use. History: Coltura was founded in 2014 with the purpose of phasing out the use of gasoline and diesel. Our name is a combination of CO2 and Culture, and we seek to bring about a cultural shift in how our society understands and uses CO2.

What We Do

Policy: We are pursuing state policy to phase out gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles, and require that all new vehicles sold starting in 2030 be clean, zero-emissions vehicles. We are currently focusing on California and Washington. Phasing out gasoline vehicles in those states will blaze the path for other states and the entire country to transition to clean alternatives. We are spearheading a new and powerful coalition called Yes Clean Cars, and leading the campaign to accelerate the transition away from gasoline use. Culture: Coltura is changing the cultural meaning of gasoline and leading the no-gasoline movement. Just as the no-smoking movement highlighted the dangers of second-hand smoke, the no-gasoline movement raises awareness of the health, climate and equity impacts of gasoline and diesel use, and mobilizes opposition to gasoline and demand for a new, clean standard. We are telling the unseen story of gasoline through art and other media. We are also unifying government, business and community leaders around a goal of promptly ending gasoline’s use. We are developing compelling narratives about the harms of gasoline, the benefits of clean alternatives, and the pathways to make the switch--and inspiring leaders to advance them.
