Register for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

Could your organization benefit from a group of volunteers for a day? If so, sign up to host a project for MLK Day of Service!

On Monday, Jan. 20th, 2025, United Way will coordinate a countywide volunteer event honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King. With the challenges facing our region and the world, MLK Day of Service is a great opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy of compassion and justice. Your organization can join this event by listing your MLK Day volunteer project(s) with us.

Hint: Reviewing this entire page before registering will help you immensely - we promise! And don't forget to check out the updated Resources.

Keep in mind before posting your project(s):

  • Projects can occur from 1/15/2025 to 1/22/2025, typically the best chance for recruiting volunteer teams are projects on the holiday, Monday, Jan. 20th. You can host as many projects as you like!

  • Projects must take place in King County (contact us with any special circumstances).

  • Projects may be virtual or in-person.
  • Organizations must have liability insurance to participate in this event (except for Seattle Public Schools).

  • Volunteers can help with just about anything, so be creative! Need help developing a volunteer project? Contact us at volunteers@uwkc.org.

  • Project sites must be able to provide all necessary supplies for the project.

  • The United Way Volunteer Engagement Team will be approving and promoting projects with a social justice/racial equity focus in mind.

  • United Way will work hard to promote this event and your projects. We can't guarantee all projects will be selected, but will do our best!

Ready to Register?

Save your valuable time: Read and follow ALL these steps to make sure your registration is done correctly.

  • Click on the "OPPORTUNITIES" tab under the pink toolbox.

  • Click "Add New Opportunity" and  fill out the form.

**Please note: You can "clone" an opportunity from last year, but do not just change the initiative and dates from an existing opportunity. Contact us with questions about how to do this.

    • Set the Initiative to "2025 MLK Day of Service".

    • Set the registration close date to a week before your project (unless you can take last minute sign ups then feel free to set it at a day or two before the event).
    • Add the point of contact's name and email from your organization in the description field of the form so volunteers can easily contact you if they have questions.

    • Select "allow teams to register".

    • If your project should be private for a specific group, note the volunteer project leader's name, email and company/group in the attributes section (ex: "Private project for Luke Cage, lcage@marvel.com, Marvel Comics").

United Way will make the project private and send the project leader a private link so they won't be able to see the project on our public site. If you don't do this step your project will go public for anyone to register. You can confirm United Way staff made your project private in the OPPORTUNITIES section of the site-- it will say "Private" under the Privacy column.

  • To confirm you registered correctly make sure your opportunity is listed under the "2025 MLK Day of Service" Initiative.

  • Your project will remain pending/yellow until volunteer registration opens up on December 2nd. Projects submitted after 12/02 will be considered on a rolling basis.
