Schools may be closed for face-to-face learning but after-school STEM programs are still an important part of the curriculum. We want our community to know we support them. We want current and prospective donors to know we're still around and can always use a helping hand. What Will You Be Doing? Volunteer: FIRST Washington Board of DirectorsFIRST Washington is seeking two individuals to join its Board of Directors. Potential board members should be committed to providing Washington state youth with engaging and exciting robotics programs aimed at building STEM skills and creating a future workforce of STEM professionals. Fostering a culture that is welcoming for all students is the top priority for FIRST. Our vision is that of a future workforce of young professionals who are as diverse and vibrant as our state's population. Potential board members should demonstrate strong leadership skills and a willingness to leverage their personal and professional networks across the state and in their local communities. FIRST Washington is committed to increasing diversity and access across all of our programs and is looking for individuals with experience and leadership skills to help us reach under-represented groups and communities. FIRST Washington is a statewide non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster essential life skills including self-confidence, communication and leadership. Board support—emotional, physical, and financial—provides the necessary foundation for a successful and strong organization. Above all, board involvement will illustrate the commitment to our FIRST Washington mission and inspire all generations to engage in our programs and activities. All Board members sign annually the Roles and Responsibilities document below: (1) Contribute to the defining of FIRST Washington’ mission and governing the fulfillment of that mission, (2) Provide my personal and professional expertise in support of organizations programs, projects and initiatives when called upon to do so, and (3) Carry out the functions of the office of board member as stated in the bylaws. My role as a board member will focus on the development of broad policies that govern the implementation of organizational plans and purposes. This role is separate and distinct from the role of the professional staff, who determine the means of implementation. For the duration of my three-year term, I pledge: My attendance at a minimum of 5 board meetings per year and a majority of the meetings for the committees on which I serve. I will come to these meetings prepared to discuss the issues to be addressed having read the agenda and all background material. Participation can be in person or virtual through GoToMeeting. Active participation on at least one standing committee annually. To participate in(1) The annual meeting of the board held in September, (2) Fundraising and sponsorship activities through my active participation, (3) Board self-evaluation processes, and (4) Board development activities that enhance my skills as a board member. To financially support FIRSTWashington through a personally significant annual contribution. To refrain from intruding on administrative issues that are the responsibility of organization management, except to monitor results. To act in accordance with the Conflict of Interest Policy adopted by the FIRSTWashington Board of Directors. To always act for the good of FIRSTWashington and represent the interests of all people served by FIRST To represent FIRSTWashington throughout the community in a positive and supportive manner at all times.
