Volunteer: VITA Tax Preparer
About The Washington West African Center (WAWAC) is seeking a detail-oriented and community-minded individual to join our team as a VITA Tax Preparer. This essential volunteer role supports our mission to empower underserved communities by providing free, accurate, and confidential tax preparation services to individuals and families with low to moderate income.
As a VITA Tax Preparer, you will work closely with WAWAC’s Tax Program Coordinator and other volunteers to assist clients in filing their federal and state tax returns. Your efforts will help ensure financial stability and access to critical tax credits for those who need them most.
Responsibilities - Prepare federal and state tax returns for eligible clients using IRS-approved software - Conduct thorough interviews to ensure accurate and complete tax filings - Educate clients on available tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit - Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in handling sensitive financial information - Collaborate with other volunteers and staff to ensure smooth operations during tax season - Attend IRS-provided training and pass the required certification exams - Assist with intake, scheduling, and client support as needed - Uphold IRS and WAWAC standards for ethical conduct and data security - Participate in team meetings and ongoing training to stay current on tax law updates
