Volunteer: SPIN Fellows Career Coach

STEM Paths Innovation Network (SPIN) is a nonprofit offering K-12 instruction, mentoring and program development in science, technology, engineering, and math. Our mission is to close the opportunity gap for women and BIPOC communities in SPIN education and careers.  


Purpose:

The SPIN Fellows Career Coach Volunteer at STEM Paths Innovation Network will provide a culturally-responsive and uplifting coaching experience for 11th and 12th grade students of color. This includes providing support and resources, both academic and personal.

Job Title:

SPIN Fellows Career Coach Volunteer


Location:

The SPIN Fellows Career Coach Volunteer will work out of SPIN’s main office at 3407 NE 2nd St, Renton, WA 98056 and at designated sites and events as identified by the SPIN Fellows Program Manager. 

Key Responsibilities may include:


(1) Help students by providing informational interviews

(2) Provide or assist in finding job shadowing and internship opportunities for SPIN Fellows

(3) Mentor SPIN Fellows using culturally-responsive and strengths-based approach

(4) Develop and present SPIN Fellows with workshops on career and college prep skills


Reports to:

SPIN Fellows Program Manager

Length of Appointment:


The SPIN Fellows Career Coach Volunteer commits to attending at least 3 events with SPIN Fellows, from a career panel to a workshop to general support, over the course of the academic year. 

Time Commitment:

The SPIN Fellows Career Coach Volunteer will provide up to 10 hours a month throughout the year.


Qualifications:

SPIN Fellows seeks coaches working in STEM fields**, especially women of color*, to volunteer their time as coaches for our students.




Support Provided:







An orientation to SPIN and SPIN Girls will be scheduled for the SPIN Girls Mentor Volunteer. In addition, attendance at quarterly volunteer meetings is required. The SPIN Girls Manager is available on an ongoing basis to answer questions and provide other assistance as needed.

Additional Perks:


The opportunity to create a network of like minded individuals that have a passion for STEM and youth engagement. As well as the ability to contribute to a student’s personal, academic, and professional goals.

The volunteer will drive engagement by creating high-quality original content, as well as manage the social media communities by responding to comments and messages across platforms.

Responsibilities:
1. Develops high-quality written and visual content for each social media platform under SPIN.
2. Monitors and updates SPIN’s accounts on social media, including posting content and responding to comments and inquiries.
3. Track effectiveness of our social media presence and recommend next steps to the SPIN team.
4. Attend major SPIN events to “capture” the story of students and stakeholders to best market SPIN’s mission and brand via social media.

Qualifications:
-Must be 18+ years old
-Strong familiarity and practice using platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook
-Communicate effectively with strong written communication skills
-Ability to give and receive feedback
-Good understanding of confidentiality
-Able to work independently with little direction in order to meet organizational goals
-Marketing experience preferred
