RASKC welcomes applicants who would like to help cats in the mornings by cleaning their condos and colony rooms, in addition to doing other prep work in the Cat Adoptions Building. You may help rabbits too, if you like. Other duties include: monitoring cats' health, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and taking out the garbage. This is a terrific workout that brings so much joy to the cats!

Among the open positions, you may usually choose a weekly shift that takes place at least two hours (or longer), starting at 8am or 8:30am.

This "hands on" work provides the foundation for smooth operations at the shelter.

As a foster volunteer, you would make a short-term commitment to nurture one or more animals from the shelter in your home on a temporary basis. 

Some cats need a break from living at the shelter.  Providing time in your home helps them get ready to be adopted. Many cats need a quiet patch of sunlight to recover from a cold, for example.

RASKC also offers kittens, rabbits, and dogs to foster too.

Are you in a position to help?

Among the animals that are eligible to be fostered, you choose which animal that will go home with you.

Foster volunteers are given training online and 1:1, great support and everything necessary-- free pet food, free medical care for the kitty, free litter, free litter box, free kennel...

When the pet is ready to be adopted, you may choose to:

   a) adopt to a member of the community through RASKC's Adopters Welcome program, or

   b) bring the animal back to the shelter, or

   c) adopt the animal yourself.

You can decide when the time is right for you to foster-- on an ongoing basis or just every once in a while.

Children may participate in the animal care, though an adult in the household must be the official volunteer.

Community service might be available for school (if okay with the school). Usually 1.5 hours is credited for each day an animal is cared for in your home.

2. Go to RASKC's website. View the training videos- Modules 1, 2, & 4 - then answer the questions.

 

3. Submit your completed liability-release form if you are an adult. If you are a youth, the form would need to be completed by your parent/ legal guardian.

RASKC seeks adult volunteers who are very committed to positive dog-engagement, skilled with a wide range of large, untrained, and very energetic dogs, especially German Shepherds, Huskies, and pit bull terriers and mixes. 

This is exhilarating and fulfilling work!

RASKC seeks an initial commitment of a once-a-week shift for about six months (or alternating-week shifts for about a year), equating to about 50 hours out of training.  The shelter accommodates time off for special vacations and so forth.

Key to success with RASKC dogs is kindness, positive reinforcement, following protocols in getting the dogs in and out of the kennels, and accurately reading and responding to dogs' body language.

Key to RASKC's success: a sense of great teamwork between volunteers and staff.

Typically, you would share a shift with three or four other volunteers.

Volunteers harness the dogs and take them out for exercise, affection, and enrichment. If it's super hot out, then enjoy some nice chill time on a bench under a shady tree with the dog.

Dog walkers are color-coded according to the type of dog they are eligible to walk.

. Green: Most Dog Walkers start as color "green" are eligible to work with our friendliest dogs. Not many green positions, if any, are available, however.

. Blue: Dog Walkers who are assessed as "blue" are eligible to take out the shy dogs and the friendly dogs.

. Red: Dog Walkers who are identified as "red" are eligible to walk any of the adoptable dogs, including the ones that need skillful handling.

RASKC needs volunteers who hope to work with "red" dogs.

A precious bunny would love to receive care in your home for a few weeks (or a few months) until an adopter has been identified or until a spot has opened up at Reber Ranch.

RASKC provides free food, free hay, free supplies, plus free medicine and free medical care for the foster animals.

 

Foster training is provided online with lots of one-on-one support, if needed, from RASKC's Foster Care Coordinator and/or RASKC's Lead Rabbit Volunteer.

 

Opening your heart and your home to an animal from the shelter on a temporary basis is one of the very best things you can do to help.

 

It the situation isn't working out for any reason, you can return the bunny back to the shelter the next afternoon.

 

Children may assist in the animal care, but an adult in the household would need to be the official foster volunteer.

 

Community service for school might be available (if okayed by the school). Usually 1.5 hours credit is given for each day caring for a foster animal.
