Volunteer: Northwest Seaport Board OpeningNorthwest Seaport (www.nwseaport.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of our maritime heritage and to the development of maritime-based educational programs and opportunities. We fulfill our mission onboard our fleet of historic vessels: Arthur Foss, a tugboat built in 1889, the star of the 1933 classic movie Tugboat Annie, and the oldest wooden tugboat in the U.S., Lightship No. 83 “Swiftsure”, built in 1904 and the only lightship with her original steam engine, The halibut schooner Tordenskjold, build in 1911 in Ballard and a veteran of over a century of fishing in the North Pacific. Twilight, a 36’ purse seinerThe Arthur Foss and Lightship No. 83 are registered as National Historic Landmarks. All of our ships provide hands-on platforms for educational programs, public tours, and annual festivals that celebrate workboat culture, boats, music and stories. Our educational programs range from tugboat storytime for preschoolers to work exchange and boatwright in residence programs for young adults starting their maritime career. We also host the annual Classic Workboat every fall as well as a variety of other public programs throughout the year. Most of our fundraisers are held onboard our historic ships. They include a St. Patrick’s Day party, Tugboat Happy Hours every Tuesday from mid-July through August, and a fireworks party on the 4th of July. These events, earned income from vessel rentals, and general donations support our operations and educational programs. Most off our restoration efforts are funded through competitive grants. We have a staff of 1.5 (full-time Executive Director and half time Vessel Manager) as well as a group of regular boatwrights and marine engineers who support our restoration and maintenance efforts on project-specific contracts. Our board of directors is actively engaged in all aspects of our operation, from writing grants, managing events, and volunteering on our ships to fundraising, providing legal counsel, and building community connections. We are looking for new board members with expertise in any of the following areas: Fundraising and development Marketing IT Workforce developmentThe board meets monthly, on our ships in the summer and in board member offices in the winter.
