Sock It to Homelessness is an in-person event on December 7th, 2025. Socks are critical to the comfort and well-being of homeless people. Imagine what it must be like to have the same pair of nasty, wet socks on your feet, 24-hours a day. Not good. Socks won’t solve our community’s homeless crisis. But socks can keep homeless people hopeful, knowing there are neighbors like you, who care.

Opportunities/Shifts 

Greeters: greet guests at the door, make sure they sign in, show where to drop socks, provide in-kind receipt if requested, direct to snacks, inform about tours.

Additionally, advocates help with nightly set up and tear down of the service space and work with staff coordinators to create detailed records of the evening’s activities.

REQUIREMENTS: Advocates are an integral part of the Teen Feed dinner program and act as consistent sources of support for our young people. Having the same people show up on a regular basis creates a sense of community and trust. Advocates commit to 2/2.5 hours (6:00/6:30-8:30pm) one evening per week for a minimum of one year of service. This includes the holiday season, as Teen Feed continues to operate every day of the year. This position has limited interaction with clients and is more organizational in nature.  This opportunity is at our 216 James Clinic and the Lew Middleton Drop In Center in downtown Seattle.  The Lew Middleton Drop-In Center was started by Washington state’s longest-standing Certified Peer Counselor, Lew Middleton Jr. Since 1994, the center is and continuously aims to be a safe space for an incredibly special and diverse population. The center is staffed and operated by a team of Certified Peer Specialists, who receive intensive clinical training in order to best serve the community and provide recovery-oriented services.

Many of those we serve, have low to no income so these supplies are essential at ensuring their well being. This volunteer role would be responsible for maintaining the organization of these supplies so that they are easily accessible, as well as communicating any needs when supplies are low or out. Frequency in most cases would be weekly and schedule is flexible depending on volunteer schedule and location needs/abilities.

Over 1,500 youth and young adults between the ages of 12-25 are homeless or unstably housed in King County. Shelter beds and community resources are limited, leaving the vast majority of young people without access to food or safe housing.

Through the YMCA Host Homes Program, you have the opportunity to be a champion for some of these young adults facing who are facing homelessness.

WHAT IS THE YMCA HOST HOMES PROGRAM?

Host Homes is a 6-month transitional housing program that matches young people ages 18 - 24 who are at risk of experiencing homelessness with caring hosts in the community who can provide the space and opportunity young adults need to build independent living skills, gain stability, and focus on goal attainment. While enrolled, young adults receive 1-on-1 case management support as well as access to wrap-around services through the YMCA Social Impact Center.

Hosts are volunteers in King County who want to make a difference in the life of a young person. They offer a room in their home that provides safe, short-term housing to a young adult who needs support to focus on housing, employment, education, and/or other stabilizing goals. Hosts receive guidance and support from our Team every step of the way.

It is important to us that young people have the opportunity to be matched with host families that fit within their cultural orientation and individual lifestyle. We are searching for host families that come from various backgrounds and experiences. Host families may be single, married or partnered and represent a wide range of ethnicities, religions, sexual identities, cultures, etc.

One common trait that all host families have is their passion, commitment and dedication in making a positive difference in the lives of young people.

WHO CAN BE A HOST HOME PROVIDER?

Families who want to give back to their community and serve as a support for a young adult experiencing homelessness may be interested in joining the YMCA Host Homes program. Although Host Homes is a short 6-month commitment, many Hosts and participants find that their connection continues long after their exit. 

Host Homes is also a great opportunity for prospective foster parents who would like to try living with a young person for 6 months before committing to something more long-term.

All hosts must meet the following criteria:

Host families must be 21 years of age or older. Have a spare bedroom or private space within their home. Pass a background OR reference check. Have homeowner or renters insurance and live within King County. Must be willing to complete a home inspection and training program.

WHAT ARE HOST HOME PROVIDERS' RESPONSIBILITIES?

Host families are asked to:

Provide temporary stable housing for six months. Provide a safe, nurturing and welcoming environment for trust and friendship to develop between the young person and your family. Create agreements with the young person and hold them accountable to those agreements. The opportunity to participate in your family’s daily life and events, make them feel a part of the family with the same privileges and obligations. Provide a private bedroom with a bed and meals. Maintain close contact with the Host Home Recruiter and address problems and concerns (difficulty adapting to family, behavior etc.) as they occur.

Once enrolled, Hosts will receive a monthly stipend to offset any expenses associated with having another person in the home.

Please note: Hosts are NOT expected to provide any financial assistance to the young adult - they will work with their Case Manager who will support them with any expressed needs.

If you are already hosting a young adult between the ages of 12 - 24 and are not a parent or guardian, you may be eligible for supports through our Kinship Host Homes model.

Host Homes is a 6-month transitional housing program that matches young people ages 18 - 24 who are at risk of experiencing homelessness with caring hosts in the community who can provide the space and opportunity young adults need to build independent living skills, gain stability, and focus on goal attainment. While enrolled, young adults receive 1-on-1 case management support as well as access to wrap-around services through the YMCA Social Impact Center.

Hosts are volunteers in King County who want to make a difference in the life of a young person. They offer a room in their home that provides safe, short-term housing to a young adult who needs support to focus on housing, employment, education, and/or other stabilizing goals. Hosts receive guidance and support from our Team every step of the way.

It is important to us that young people have the opportunity to be matched with host families that fit within their cultural orientation and individual lifestyle. We are searching for host families that come from various backgrounds and experiences. Host families may be single, married or partnered and represent a wide range of ethnicities, religions, sexual identities, cultures, etc.

One common trait that all host families have is their passion, commitment and dedication in making a positive difference in the lives of young people.

WHO CAN BE A HOST HOME PROVIDER?

Families who want to give back to their community and serve as a support for a young adult experiencing homelessness may be interested in joining the YMCA Host Homes program. Although Host Homes is a short 6-month commitment, many Hosts and participants find that their connection continues long after their exit. 

Host Homes is also a great opportunity for prospective foster parents who would like to try living with a young person for 6 months before committing to something more long-term.

All hosts must meet the following criteria:

Host families must be 21 years of age or older. Have a spare bedroom or private space within their home. Pass a background OR reference check. Have homeowner or renters insurance and live within King County. Must be willing to complete a home inspection and training program.

WHAT ARE HOST HOME PROVIDERS' RESPONSIBILITIES?

Host families are asked to:

Provide temporary stable housing for six months. Provide a safe, nurturing and welcoming environment for trust and friendship to develop between the young person and your family. Create agreements with the young person and hold them accountable to those agreements. The opportunity to participate in your family’s daily life and events, make them feel a part of the family with the same privileges and obligations. Provide a private bedroom with a bed and meals. Maintain close contact with the Host Home Recruiter and address problems and concerns (difficulty adapting to family, behavior etc.) as they occur.

Once enrolled, Hosts will receive a monthly stipend to offset any expenses associated with having another person in the home.

Please note: Hosts are NOT expected to provide any financial assistance to the young adult - they will work with their Case Manager who will support them with any expressed needs.

If you are already hosting a young adult between the ages of 12 - 24 and are not a parent or guardian, you may be eligible for supports through our Kinship Host Homes model.

Between 7PM and 10:30PM, overnight volunteers will assist in tasks identical to evening volunteers. After lights out, overnight shifts are broken up into four 2-hour awake shifts. Overnight Volunteers are asked to remain awake for one of these 2-hour shifts, and will sleep for the remaining 6 hours at our shelter. During the awake shift, Overnight Volunteers are responsible for assisting in walk-arounds of the room every 10 minutes. During walk-arounds volunteers are available for guests who require emergency assistance, and complete guest laundry. We ask that Overnight Volunteers commit to one shift per week; bedding, dinner, and breakfast are all provided. All overnight volunteers will be supported by shelter staff at all times and they are there to address any questions or concerns during your shift. In-shelter Overnight Shift (This shift starts at 7pm on Monday and ends at 8:30am the following morning). Overnight volunteers stay overnight at our shelter along with our guests. Volunteers work in teams and directly with our staff to help ensure emotional stability and physical safety within the space. Between 7PM and 10:30PM, overnight volunteers will assist in tasks identical to evening volunteers. After lights out, overnight shifts are broken up into four 2-hour awake shifts. Overnight Volunteers are asked to remain awake for one of these 2-hour shifts, and will sleep for the remaining 6 hours at our shelter. During the awake shift, Overnight Volunteers are responsible for assisting in walk-arounds of the room every 10 minutes. During walk-arounds volunteers are available for guests who require emergency assistance, and complete guest laundry. We ask that Overnight Volunteers commit to one shift per week; bedding, dinner, and breakfast are all provided. All overnight volunteers will be supported by shelter staff at all times and they are there to address any questions or concerns during your shift. We highly appreciate the commitment of Overnight Volunteers and see them as crucial support in the operation of the shelter space.

God’s Li’l Acre Day Center offers laundry, showers, hygiene supplies, companionship & community, a clothing closet, storage, mailing address, food, and a community kitchen. It also offers a space to just "be" for folks who otherwise don't have one. 

We are committed to maintaining this vital resource for our community members experiencing homelessness throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteers at GLA help around the space in a variety of ways - distributing bus tickets, cleaning, sanitizing, organizing donations, or simply being present and listening. Successful GLA volunteers are flexible, personable, and great at taking initiative.

GLA is a trauma-informed, peaceful space for people experiencing homelessness to relax and recharge amid a chaotic environment on the street. Volunteers and staff at GLA seek to affirm the creativity, resiliency, generosity, skills, assets, and giftedness of each person. 

Our hours are Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm.
Women’s Spa Days are on Tuesdays, 1-4 pm - female-identifying guests and volunteers only for this time, please.

Title: Front Desk Reception 

Position Summary: Volunteers in this role present a welcoming voice and face when they answer the door, phone, and respond to email inquiries. Our front desk volunteers are the first point of contact for people calling Jubilee about housing assistance, donations, and getting involved. Front Desk volunteers engage regularly with women experiencing homelessness to provide more info about Jubilee’s program and make referrals to connect women in the community with much-needed resources.

Join us in supporting young people in Seattle's University District! Teen Feed works with the community to offer support to meet basic needs, build strong relationships, and ally with homeless youth as they meet their future off the streets. Teen Feed meets youth nightly with a hot, home-cooked, and nutritious dinner along with access to basic needs and caring adults. Street Outreach teams meet young people where they're at, providing resources and access to youth-centered case management. 

Since COVID, Teen Feed has transitioned to hot to-go meal service. Volunteers will help cook or package hot meals in our kitchen, which will be distributed to young people by trained staff. Dinner volunteer opportunities available in the University District from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. 

**Some safety considerations: We are asking that at this time anyone who may fall into a high-risk category does not participate in person at dinner. The COVID-19 crisis has hit the most vulnerable neighbors in our community the hardest. Clients in Attain Housing's safe and supportive transitional housing program are all extremely low-income, living on an average annual salary of about $10,000. Our Stable Home clients are also low- to moderate income, and 2 of every 5 are disabled.

 Donating is the fastest way for you to make a difference as we grapple with the impact of the Coronavirus. If you would also like to give your time, we would love to have the help.

Eviction prevention: As low-wage workers in East King County are sent home from their jobs with no pay, or need to stay home with children whose schools or day cares are closed, Attain Housing's Stable Home program keeps them housed with immediate funds to help cover their rent. Primarily we need someone to answer phones and take messages from time to time, however, the Volunteer may be asked to help with other small tasks. Once a month, and twice a month in the winter, we travel to wherever people are staying and provide food, hot beverages, warm clothing, bus tickets, basic first-aid, survival needs, and information on services. We also provide food and basic veterinary care for our client's pets where possible. We think of ourselves as somewhat of a delivery service for our clients.

We meet for outreach on the second Saturday of every month between April and December and the second and fourth Saturdays of every month from January through March. Outreach runs from 630am until approximately 11:00am and volunteers need to be available to attend for the entire outreach unless they have made arrangements to leave earlier ahead of time.

Your time volunteering would be spent preparing food and supplies, loading vehicles, and driving/hiking the supplies directly to where our clients are living. While not required, we thrive on having a group of committed volunteers who are able to attend outreach on a consistent basis.

Volunteer Requirements:
-18+ years of age due to the sensitive nature of our work
- Able to hike long distances
- Able to lift up to 25 pounds
- Sturdy Boots
- Fluent in Spanish helpful, but not required
- Car helpful, but not required

God's Li'l Acre is a hygiene and community kitchen program in the Lake City Neighborhood of Seattle. As of February 2019, we began receiving City of Seattle Funding to expand hours of operation to be open from 9am - 4pm. Morning or afternoon volunteers are welcome, with a particular interest in volunteers from NE Seattle. If volunteers live in the area served by the day center, neighborly relationships and connections with people experiencing homelessness carry over into everyday interactions - in which we are no longer strangers to one another. 

Activities at GLA include: personal storage, community kitchen, clothing depot, laundry, showers, phone, mail distribution, internet, resources, referral and companionship. The number of guests who visit GLA range from 50-60 people. Guests generally range in age from 35-60 years, who are typically single male from a variety of backgrounds. Many guests could be described as chronically homeless with numerous challenges that make it difficult to find housing and employment. Although challenges may include disability, anger management, experiences of abuse, broken relationships, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental illnesses; volunteers and staff at GLA seek to affirm the creativity, resiliency, generosity, skills, assets and giftedness of each person. The center becomes a place of peace and respite amidst the chaos of peoples lives. In the dynamic of comings and goings of people, the staff of volunteers, interns and community ministers are witness to many experiences of grace. The center practices modalities of person-centred, trauma-informed companionship with persons experiencing homelessness.

Activities at GLA include: personal storage, community kitchen, clothing depot, laundry, showers, phone, mail distribution, internet, resources, referral and companionship. The number of guests who visit GLA range from 50-60 people. Guests generally range in age from 35-60 years, who are typically single male from a variety of backgrounds. Many guests could be described as chronically homeless with numerous challenges that make it difficult to find housing and employment. Although challenges may include disability, anger management, experiences of abuse, broken relationships, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental illnesses; volunteers and staff at GLA seek to affirm the creativity, resiliency, generosity, skills, assets and giftedness of each person. The center becomes a place of peace and respite amidst the chaos of peoples lives. In the dynamic of comings and goings of people, the staff of volunteers, interns and community ministers are witness to many experiences of grace. The center practices modalities of person-centred, trauma-informed companionship with persons experiencing homelessness.
