Team Read will be hosting a book sorting session at our headquarters in SODO for volunteers to join! January is a transition month for everyone at Team Read - our site libraries will need replenishing, meaning volunteers get the incredible chance to see the diverse, inclusive literature that readers will engage with this year! Our event will have two stations. Volunteers at our first station will be making site libraries in an assembly line style. For our second station, volunteers will sort through our book surplus, helping to categorize, level and label them for future use. We may add organizing stations to ensure efficiency - sorting books can get overwhelming! This event is all ages, and we will make accommodations to ensure that folks with varying capacities can be involved.

Q: How will you raise awareness of - and reflect on - the role of racial and social justice within the volunteer project? A: On either end of the event will we host a presentation and discussion about literacy as an imperative social justice issue, the critical need for literacy programs, and MLK's legacy as an educator. Discussion is not limited to the presentation section either! We will be able to discuss as we work. This is an opportunity for interested volunteers to learn about literacy rates in King County, the students of color that we serve, and the deep intersections of literacy and critical race issues. We believe there's so much to teach the wider community about the right to read, and we invite this opportunity to do so. |
