Why your Volunteer Service is Important
Healthy parks are essential in our communities. Projects on this day at Steve Cox memorial Park will address both the health of the environment ecosystems within this active park but also the aesthetics and functional value of the park. We will work together to make the park healthier and more welcoming for people and animals to enjoy.
Steve Cox Memorial Park
Formerly White Center Park, this park was renamed Steve Cox Memorial Park in 2007 in honor of a fallen King County Sheriff's Deputy who was also a beloved community leader. The park offers Mel Olson Stadium, baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, play and picnic areas, and a foot reflexology walking path. This park is also home to the White Center Community Center, an historical building constructed as a Works Progress Administration project in 1940. Also known as the "Log Cabin", the community center houses King County Parks' White Center Teen Program, which provides after-school recreational programming to neighborhood youth aged 12 to 19. In 2008, major renovations upgraded the baseball stadium with a synthetic turf infield and other improvements as part of King County Park's CPG program.
What to Expect
Event will begin with a discussion that includes information about King County Parks, the park that you are serving in, why this work is important and tool use and safety. King County will supply work gloves, a jug of water, light snacks, all instruction and tools. Young people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Any minors under the age of 18 attending the event without a parent or legal guardian must also bring a signed Youth Waiver to event in order to participate. Please plan to arrive on time for the start of the event and allow extra time to find parking. Valuable information about the park and instruction on the project is given at the start of the event and it is important for all volunteers to be present. Our projects for the afternoon will be focused on sprucing up the park planting beds and the area around the log cabin and the park sign by Sheriff’s storefront with weeding, installing some new plants and spreading woodchip mulch.
