2019 MLK @Garfield: Prep & Serve Community Meal  Get Connected Icon

Calendar Happens On Jan 21, 2019
Time 11:30-4:30

Description

Community Meal volunteers create a positive experience for all our guests as they reflect on all the day's activities over a wonderful meal.

Volunteers will:

  • Help kitchen personnel in areas of need (line servers, dishwashers, helping set up for meals and helping to clean up after meals)
  • Serve  guests in a pleasant, efficient, courteous and professional manner
  • Assist in some preparation of food (ex. Plate desserts, brew coffee, make ice tea, etc.).
  • Set up and breakdown of buffet tables, chairs, etc.
  • Keep the dining and kitchen area clean and organized, changing trash receptacles, wiping tables, etc.
  • Let staff know about items that need to be replenished and restocked.
  • Help anyone with special needs (such as guide people with visual impairments or disabilities)

A few guidelines for volunteers:

  • Volunteers working in the kitchen will be required to wear closed‐toe & low heel shoes – you will be on your feet a long time!
  • When working around food hair needs to be tied back or covered w/ a hat.
  • There may be lifting so let us know if you are unable to lift 25 lbs and we’ll assign you to a non-lifting role.
  • Have a food handler's permit? That's helpful but not mandatory!

You may be split into sub-teams to focus on specific tasks. The end time is an estimate and with lots of people to help we may finish earlier!

Before your shift - check out the workshops, job fair, and part of the rally!  Info is updated regularly at www.seattlemlkcoalition.org   #MLKSeattle

MLK Rally in the Garfield High School Gym

Every year the Seattle MLK Jr. Organizing Coalition organizes a large-scale celebration in the only county named in Dr. King's honor. The annual MLK Seattle activities include morning workshops, a career/opportunity fair, a rally, a march from Garfield High School to downtown rally, free lunch back at Garfield, and a youth-focused event before the holiday.
