As part of our mission to "transform the way people eat", we raise Muscovy ducks for their luscious eggs. Trouble is, their pens are surrounded by blackberry brambles and forest land where typical predators lurk. Clearing away the blackberries reduces these predators' access, thus keeping our ducks safe and content. There are three spots that are high priority, along a fence line, along the forest line and around their shed. We will employ weed wacking and other means of mechanically removing blackberry brambles. As a certified organic site, no pesticides will be involved or allowed.

Q: How will you raise awareness of - and reflect on - the role of racial and social justice within the volunteer project? A: Access to local food speaks to the heart of social justice, particularly in rural areas. A vibrant local agricultural culture bolsters rural communities and offers access to opportunities for all genders and races. This particular flock is our non-profit's first attempt at hosting and mentoring a young fledgling farmer starting her business. We will be on hand to offer volunteers a tour of this enterprise and unpack the vital role local agriculture plays in environmental, social and economic justice. |
