We will be showing the film "13th", a 2016 American documentary by director Ava DuVernay. The film explores the intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States. The title comes from the Thirteenth Amendment of the Constitution, which freed the slaves and prohibited slavery (unless as punishment for a crime), allowing us to dive into the politics of mass incarceration.
We plan to have guests watch the film and enjoy a lively discussion afterwards. We will have experts on the topic to guide our discussion and look further into this 21st century civil rights issue and where our high incarceration rate stems from. We will also provide light refreshments.
