We are the gardeners at the Magnuson P-Patch, one of several nonprofit Community Gardens in Magnuson Park. We grow food and flowers for ourselves and for three local food banks.
Our project is a pilot program whose goal is to eliminate the overwhelming weeds in the plots and pathways in the P-Patch. Since it is a pilot program, it will target just a small portion the P-Patch this time around. Using garden forks, the volunteers will dig up areas with weeds, thereby loosening them from the soil. P-Patch gardeners will then much more easily remove the weeds, which volunteers will haul to our yard waste bin. Volunteers may also join the P-Patch gardeners in weeding. If the project largely eliminates the weed issues in that area, we’ll apply for a Seattle Works grant the following year to tackle the entire P-Patch.
The event is scheduled for October 16th, from 9am to 1pm.
We could effectively use as many as 10 volunteers, no younger than 16 years old. Volunteers need to be able to haul yard waste in wheelbarrows a short distance. Magnuson P-Patch will provide all gloves, tools, and materials. Feel free to bring your own gloves if you wish.
The Magnuson P-Patch has experience in hosting large groups of volunteers, including previous Seattle Works events. We are well organized and emphasize safety, teamwork and FUN! Our past volunteers have reported high levels of satisfaction with our events.
