Volunteer: Help save stuff from the landfill with community Fix-it Fairs!

A project of Zero Waste Washington, Fix-it Fairs are community gatherings bringing neighbors together to provide free repair services to the public while reducing landfill waste and passing on vital skills. These hands-on events are open to everyone and provide an empowering opportunity for individuals to learn how to repair items – like small appliances and electronics – for themselves and others. The events are held at revolving sites around town, with the goal of making them accessible to more people in more communities.

What gets fixed? We invite people to bring items in need of repairing or mending that might otherwise be thrown away, such as bikes, jewelry, clothing, small appliances, furniture, toys and electronics.

What do volunteers do? Volunteers help with a variety of event-prep activities: setting up the space, placing signage, helping guests get their items checked in, getting those items to the appropriate repair station, taking photos of guests with their repaired items and more.

Volunteer: Marra Farm Giving Garden Work Party (Group)

Do you want to end hunger in your community?

Imagine a city where people have equal access to healthy and culturally appropriate food. The Community Food Education (CFE) at Solid Ground fosters community connections through gardening education, sustainable food production, environmental stewardship, and raising awareness about good nutrition and food justice. We also fight hunger by providing low-income individuals with seeds and materials, and supporting backyard gardeners in donating fruits and vegetables grown in King County.

If you share our vision, join us at Marra Farm Giving Garden in Seattle's South Park neighborhood! A Giving Garden Work Party offers an idyllic outdoor opportunity to bond with your coworkers. Dig into soil, plant, weed, and harvest much-needed fresh food for our neighbors as you connect with your team. With the rising cost of food, our local communities rely on fresh produce from Marra Farm more than ever. Help us grow healthy and culturally appropriate food for our neighbors in need!

Time Commitment

Help us kick off the growing season in March and April, or support us during the highest need months of July through September. We’ve already set aside most Tuesdays from 9am to 2pm during the growing season for large-group work parties, preferably with 20 or more volunteers. We encourage you to sign up for a full shift, but we ask for a minimum of three hours. Teams can consist of coworkers, community or church group members, or neighbors. All are welcome!

Interested in volunteering? Register on our website or email us at marrafarm@solid-ground.org for more information!

BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), and people with the lived experience of food insecurity are strongly encouraged to volunteer.

Volunteer: Kitty Hall Adoption Event

a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }

Kitty Hall is a purr‑fectly fun cat adoption event hosted by the Seattle Animal Shelter at Seattle City Hall. For one special day, City Hall transforms into a cozy cat lounge where visitors can meet adorable, adoptable kittens and cats of all ages. Community members are invited to stop by, learn about the adoption process, chat with shelter staff and volunteers, and—most importantly—find their new feline family member.

This event also features a whimsical civic twist: attendees can cast their vote for the Kitty Council President. Meet the charming feline candidates, explore their playful “platforms,” and participate in a lighthearted election that brings a little extra civic pride to the celebration.

To make Kitty Hall a success, the Seattle Animal Shelter is seeking enthusiastic volunteers. Roles include greeting community members as they arrive, helping with gentle kitten wrangling to ensure cats stay safe and comfortable, and supporting event set‑up and tear‑down. Volunteers play a vital part in creating a welcoming, well‑organized, and fun experience for everyone—two‑legged and four‑legged alike.

Volunteer: Staff the Capitol Hill Tool Library

Join our crew to learn new skills, connect with your community, and have lots of fun. No prior experience required!

How we serve the community

The Capitol Hill Tool Library empowers our neighborhood to build DIY skills and improve sustainability, through offering tool borrowing, workspace, and classes.

Our inventory includes over 3,000 items, ranging from ice cream makers to hedge trimmers to sewing machines to drills. Our workshop has spaces for woodworking, jewelry making, and 3D printing. And our classes cover everything from backpacking to kombucha brewing wood shop safety to tax prep.

We're an entirely volunteer staff, and everything we offer is free or pay-what-you-can so that we can serve everyone in the community.

What skills you’ll need

Absolutely none. Really!

Many of us (including the person writing this listing!) came to the tool library with no DIY, woodworking, or "maker" experience at all - just an interest in connecting with our neighborhood. It’s very easy to learn on the job.

What you’ll do

We're open six days per week, for three hours each day. You'll pick a day to come in for, where you and one or two other tool librarians will serve patrons and improve the library. This includes checking tools in and out (like a library book), organizing inventory, helping patrons plan their projects, designing outreach and signage, and repairing broken items.

During your first shift, you’ll get an orientation from an existing volunteer and we’ll help you find tasks that you enjoy.

Why you’ll be excited

Staffing the tool library is a fun, rewarding way to connect with your community. You’ll meet your neighbors and help them with projects that they’re infectiously enthusiastic about. You’ll also learn a ton through your own tasks - whether it’s by cataloging new inventory, chatting with patrons, or opening up and trying to repair items.

You’ll do all this while working as a team with other sociable, community-minded tool librarians who are excited to make Capitol Hill a better place. You'll also have a chance to meet tool librarians from other shifts at our monthly volunteer potlucks.

Final ask

Please let us know your phone number so our volunteer coordinator can reach out to you. (There's no way within United Way's interface for us set this as a requirement, unfortunately.)

Volunteer: Volunteer Mentor at Greenlake Elementary "Lunch Bunch"

Become a volunteer mentor! Join a fun community!

Rally Club Seattle is recruiting mentors for its “lunch bunch” group mentor community for the 2026/27 school year. Programming takes place onsite at Greenlake Elementary School in  NE Seattle (2400 N 65th St,  Seattle, WA 98103)  weekly on Mondays from 12-1pm (approximately).

Rally Club focuses on community and making meaningful connections. Connectedness not only has a powerful protective effect on mental health, but also improves other youth outcomes such as academic competence, concern for others, and confidence. Caring mentors like you create a welcoming, fun, and inclusive community that youth want to be a part of. Time is spent in larger group activities as well as in small groups and in giving individualized attention. Activities are tailored to youth need and interest.

Some great reasons to join:

-Community is good for all of us, and volunteering has measurable health benefits.

-Our group format allows for others to cover absences, so although we ask for a once a week, semester commitment, it’s realistic.

-You can join with friend! It’s not only fun, but also provides the kids with healthy examples of adult friendships.

Volunteer: Volunteer mentor for one of our incredible students in the Bellevue School District!

Rainier Athletes' (RA) mission is to affirm our youth’s sense of purpose and belonging by intentionally connecting their core community of teachers, coaches, families, and mentors.

RA is a long term mentoring organization that begins walking alongside students and their families in 4th grade and continues through high school graduation and beyond. Each student is matched with a dedicated mentor who meets with them weekly, fully funded to participate in year round sports and activities, and supported as they explore and advocate for their unique identity.

No experience with sports, mentoring, or working with youth is required. Trainings are held throughout the year and you’ll have support from our dedicated team whenever you need it.

RA students are not just athletes, but are also artists, activists, engineers, and up-and-coming philosophers. Their passions are a way that we engage in a deeper conversation with them and their supporters. So no, you don’t have to love sports! RA mentors are volunteers with diverse backgrounds, skill sets, and interests.

Volunteer mentors meet with their mentee once a week at the mentee’s school. After check-ins, mentors share a report with their mentee’s family, teachers, and coaches. RA mentors are bridge builders, strengthening relationships beyond their one-on-one connection to the student by uniting the student’s entire Core Community of supporters. We call this approach ONE Team Mentoring!

Mentors typically spend 1 hour per week between meeting with the student, and communicating with their parents, teachers, etc. We ask mentors to commit for at least one full school year.

Check ins are typically held on Thursdays or Friday afternoons. The level of involvement outside of weekly check-ins is up to you. Mentors rave about the extra time they spend attending activities like sports games and milestones like birthday parties, graduations, and quinceañeras.
