Volunteer: Refugee Community Garden Individual Volunteering

Volunteer at Paradise Parking Plots Community Garden and support our refugee neighbors! Our 2-acre community garden provides space for refugee, immigrant and Kent resident gardeners to grow cultural foods and reconnect with the soil. Organization: Literacy Source

Did you know that 1 in 6 adults in Washington State lack the English literacy skills needed to get a livable wage job? Literacy Source makes it possible for adults to gain the basic literacy skills they need to succeed in school, to find a job, to achieve life goals, and to create a better, more hopeful future.

Tutors help our students gain self-sufficiency and greater confidence in their English listening/speaking, reading and writing, and digital literacy skills.

Our volunteer ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tutors offer individualized support to adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing skills, math skills, or those who want to improve their English by developing lesson plans that focus on each individual students' needs and own goals from beginner to intermediate level.

We work with a diverse group of both native and non-native English speakers at our learning center in Lake City.

Bilingualism and/or experience working with adult immigrants and/or refugees is a plus. Training and support will be provided.

Literacy Source is an equal opportunity employer working towards a culturally diverse workplace. We strongly encourage applications from the BIPOC community, immigrants, refugees, women, people with disabilities, members of the LBGTQ community and other underrepresented and historically marginalized groups.

Volunteer: Gift Card Donations for West African Immigrants and Refugees

In an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, we are shifting to no-contact gift card donation opportunities.

This last year has been hard on everyone, but our refugee and immigrant communities have had it harder than most. Out of the 4,800 West African immigrants and refugees we serve every year at West African Community Council, we estimate nearly half have lost their main source of income within the household since the spread of Covid-19. Times are extremely tough, and so we ask your help in supporting our community which is made up of inspired, determined individuals who have arrived in King County with the hope and dream of creating a better life!

In order to reduce stress in the families we serve, we are asking for gift-card donations redeemable for food and necessities. Our suggested donation is a $25 gift card (or cards) to stores such as Target, Walmart, and Safeway. These cards can be purchased online and sent directly to The West African Community Council at 6322 44th Ave S. Seattle, WA 98118 where they will be distributed to those who need it most.
