Volunteer: Board Member for ELAP (Eastside Legal Assistance Program)Board of Directors – Eastside Legal Assistance Program (Bellevue, Washington) (ELAP) Overview of ELAP ELAP is a nonprofit dedicated to working with people facing domestic violence, housing, financial, healthcare, immigration, and other issues who need a legal solution. ELAP believes that everyone deserves access to legal help. An experience with domestic violence, an unexpected medical bill, unfair eviction, or other life challenge can set people back financially, physically, and psychologically. Yet people often don’t know how to exercise their legal rights. Legal aid is a tool that can prevent poverty and injustice. Our staff and volunteer lawyers work for free with people facing domestic violence, housing, financial, healthcare, and other problems that need a legal solution. Role Description ELAP is seeking applicants to serve on our board of directors. We are a financially stable 501(c)(3) in our 35th year of operation. The ELAP Board works to provide strategic governance for the organization. All Board members serve on a Board committee through which they provide more tactical support of ELAP’s mission, including supporting development efforts, implementing organizational policies, and program development and implementation. Role Qualifications We acknowledge that board service is a privilege often limited to individuals who are socially advantaged, based on their gender, ethnic background, sexual orientation, or race. While we value past board experience, we also value a board composition that reflects the clients that ELAP serves and brings specific skill sets or professional expertise to ELAPs work. If you are passionate about our work, interested in investing your time and experience in our organization, and value growth and learning, we encourage all applications, regardless of previous experience. We are seeking applicants who complement and expand the skills, professional backgrounds, and lived experiences of our existing board members. While finance, public health, marketing, development, and HR expertise are our primary needs currently, we encourage all individuals from traditionally underserved populations to apply. Service Specifics Board members commit to the following terms: Volunteer for a 3-year term with the possibility of renewal. Regularly attend board meetings which happen up to 8 times a year (via Zoom with 2 – 3 in- person meetings each calendar year) Serve on and/or chair at least one committee (ex. Governance, Development, Board Recruitment, Attorney Volunteer, Finance). Spend an average of 6 to 10 hours a month doing board work: attending regular meetings, participating in committee work, and being an ambassador in the community. Assist with fundraising, including sponsorships, ticket sales to annual Breakfast for Justice Fundraiser, and serving as table Captain at Breakfast for Justice (filling at least one table with guests). Make a personally meaningful annual donation. Please note that ELAP Board members do not have a minimum “give get” financial responsibility. Application Details To apply, please click "Respond" and submit an APPLICATION HERE. https://elap.wufoo.com/forms/s1a7fjt31ggfto2/ ELAP reviews each application carefully and will respond within 10 working days to your submission. Thank you for taking time to submit your application and for considering ELAP Board service. Board Service Description When it comes to serving on a non-profit board, especially one that operates as a “working board” there are several key expectations for board members. These expectations ensure the organization’s effectiveness, mission alignment, and overall success. Compliance and Legal Standards: Board members must adhere to all legal requirements and regulations applicable to non-profit organizations. This includes understanding their fiduciary duties, avoiding conflicts of interest, and ensuring transparency in financial matters. Regular Board Meeting Attendance: Consistent and prepared participation at board meetings is crucial. Board members must review the board materials prior to each Board meeting, arrive promptly and attend the entire Board meeting, actively engage in discussions, and contribute to decision-making. Commitment to the Success of the Breakfast for Justice: Board members actively support ELAP’s largest annual fundraiser, the Breakfast for Justice. Each Board member serves as a table captain (filling at least one table with guests), assists with recruiting sponsors, solicits donations to ELAP through a personal fundraising page and related efforts. In addition, Board members actively support fundraising initiatives by making personal contributions, leveraging their networks, and attending fundraising and donor cultivation events. Committee Involvement: Committees handle specific tasks such as finance, governance, Board recruitment, or program development. To enhance the Board’s overall effectiveness, Board members participate actively in the work of their committees. Board members must attend committee meetings consistently, actively engage in discussions, and contribute to decision- making. Leveraging Personal and Professional Networks: Board members use their connections to benefit the organization. Whether it is introducing potential donors, collaborating with other organizations, or securing resources, their networks play a vital role. Conduct: Board members act with honesty and integrity, and always act for the good of the organization and the people it serves. Board members keep confidential information confidential. Board members work with and respect the opinion of staff members and those who serve on the Board and leave personal prejudices out of all board discussions. Volunteer: Fishing Guide VolunteerAre you looking to have some fun while making a difference in your community? Plymouth Housing Group is a local non-profit organization that provides permanent supportive housing at 17 residential buildings that serve about 1,400 residents who were formerly homelessness. We are looking for a few volunteers who are knowledgeable, passionate, and interested in outdoor recreation, specifically fishing. Our building staff want to take a group of residents on a day trip to leisurely fish and enjoy time outdoors together. We are looking for a small group of volunteers to lead the trip by choosing the location, providing some gear (a few residents have limited gear), helping residents and staff learn how to fish, and assisting with transportation. We can provide some transportation as well. This would be very relaxed as some of our residents have mobility and health limitations. Ideally the fishing location would be 20-30 minutes from downtown Seattle and not involve any hiking. Volunteers must understand and align with Plymouth's mission and values of harm reduction and housing first. Many logistics will be figured out closer to the summertime. If you and a group are interested click "Respond" to sign up or get in contact. If you have any questions, please reach out to volunteer@plymouthhousing.org. Let's get this partnership rolling! Volunteer: Be a Home Delivery Food Box Packing specialist!Help ensure food security for your neighbors by volunteering with North Helpline's food bank in Lake City! Some neighbors do not have the ability or connections necessary to shop for themselves at our weekly food distributions. To counter these barriers, North Helpline provides home delivery to homebound individuals every other week on Tuesday and Thursday. We pack on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9:30am-1:30pm with dietary needs and restrictions in mind. Because of this and the particular needs of some neighbors, attention to detail is a key attribute needed to help pack these boxes. Dietary knowledge for needs such as diabetes, gluten intolerance, and food allergies, as well as the ability to lift up to 30 pounds is also a plus. Interested in working with us? Click the "Respond" button and we will follow up with you. We hope to hear from you soon! A couple extra points: We require all volunteers scheduled to work on-site to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and present proof of vaccination before they start their shift. If you have questions regarding this, feel free to email or message us. Please wear season-appropriate clothing as our warehouse is not a climate-controlled environment. Volunteer: Board MemberBackground: The Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden connects the community to nature through a diverse and beautiful collection of historical gardens. It is an 11-acre public garden in SeaTac, WA. The Garden honors its location, memorializing the horticultural legacies of longtime Burien resident, Elda Behm and of the Seike family, who operated a nursery with an outstanding Japanese garden in Des Moines. It also embraces other notable local horticultural efforts and groups, through partnerships with local associations, such as the King County Iris Society, the Puget Sound Daylily Society, the Seattle Rose Society, the Species Fuchsia Society, and the Puget Sound Fuchsia Society. The Garden is a community asset that welcomes all visitors and provides a refuge for appreciation of nature’s beauty. Some of the ways the community engages with the Garden include quinceañeras, wedding and graduation photo ops, picnics, weddings, tours, inspiration for gardening, gardening workshops, exercise classes, and simply exploring. The Highline Botanical Garden Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that develops and manages the Garden and Garden-related programs. The Garden was created and is operated by the Foundation in cooperation with the City of SeaTac and the Port of Seattle. Role of the Board of Directors: The Board of Directors meets monthly to consider issues related to maintaining and developing the Garden. Board members contribute their ideas for addressing these issues and for creating programs to make the Garden more accessible to the community and to involve the community more with the Garden’s affairs. The Foundation publishes a quarterly newsletter that is produced by the Board. Board members manage development projects, they raise funds, they advise on the design of new areas of the Garden, and on the contents of the Foundation’s website and social media posts. They plan and execute special events in the Garden like the Ice Cream Social and Plant Sale. The Board manages the Foundations funds. The Foundation has both an Executive Director and a person who coordinates and manages rental and volunteer events at the Garden, both part-time, but a great deal of the work of the Foundation is done by the Board members. Time Commitment: The Highline Botanical Garden Foundation Board meets once a month on the first Wednesday at the North SeaTac Park Community Center. Each Board member is expected to take part in some of the various activities of the board: planning and executing events at the Garden, producing the newsletter, contributing design and development ideas, fundraising, and any of the many tasks that need doing to keep the Garden a vibrant community asset. However no Board member is expected to help with everything. We each have our interests and abilities and work best within those parameters. The Board’s unpaid officers contribute the most time to the organization, ranging from the President, which at present could easily be a full time job, through the Treasurer, easily a part-time job managing the small payroll, keeping the books, and managing the budget; the Secretary, who records the proceedings of the Board’s meetings and organizes the digital files and paper files that document the Board’s activities; and the Vice President, who at present is the lead on event planning and execution. As they say, many hands make light work, and it is our expectation that as the Board grows, the time burden on any one member, including the officers, will be at least somewhat reduced. Funding Commitment: All Board members are asked to support the Foundation financially by becoming paid members and are encouraged to support the Foundation’s work financially. However, we recognize that not every Board member is able not to make a major financial contribution to the Garden, and that contributions of time add precious value to our work. Satisfaction: Every Board member of the Highline Botanical Garden Foundation shares the joy of watching the Garden grow, bringing beauty to an area that has needed a place of respite for a long time, and reminding visitors the ordinary people can do extraordinary things with plants. We’re located in a SeaTac neighborhood with families who have come to love the North SeaTac Park and the Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden. We are happy that you have expressed an interest in the Highline Botanical Garden Foundation. Volunteer: Volunteer Mentor: Inspire Healing & Growth in Youth Through Poetry Writing
Overview
Our mission is to engage youth in writing poetry to inspire healing and growth. Pongo Poetry Mentors volunteer their time to work with youth in writing heartfelt, personal poetry. As a Pongo mentor, you will help youth write about their difficult experiences; and you will experience writing that is sometimes sad, but also a source of excitement, pride, and healing for the youth. Our volunteers find the work touching, enlightening, and enlivening — and a benefit to their careers in counseling, teaching, and community service. Empowered by their time with us, Pongo volunteers have gone on to start their own poetry projects. As a Pongo Poetry Mentor, you will be trained in Pongo’s techniques for teaching poetry writing to distressed teens in service of inspiring their healing and growth. You will be well supported and work with a close-knit, collaborative team of 3 to 4 others under the direction of an experienced Pongo Project Leader. Commitment Mentor poetry with youth at one of our project sites, once per week, for 3 hours, from mid-September through June. Join Pongo programming on time. Remain with the program until the close of the program year. Homework assignments, including writing your own poetry, and participating in ongoing skills development What is Pongo Looking for in a Mentor? Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) candidates are highly encouraged to apply. We are looking for people who are reflective, open, honest, and can bring the love! A clear understanding of personal boundaries and an ability to adapt to the guidelines of the institutions and organizations with which Pongo works. Ideal candidates write poetry (personally or professionally), have previous experience working with young people, have teaching or counseling experience, and/or have personal or professional experience in supporting individuals affected by trauma. DiversityBecause a large percentage of youth we write with are BIPOC, Pongo seeks to have a diverse team of Poetry Mentors. We know from experience that BIPOC youth are excited to see Poetry Mentors who look like them. For a powerful example, listen to Amani Carithers share her experience of volunteering with Pongo at our King County Juvenile Detention project site. A Typical Day for Pongo Poetry MentorsWhile Pongo poetry sites meet at different times, each weekly session is around 3 hours and consists of the following: Ongoing Poetry Mentor Training and Collaboration (45-60 minutes):Mentors check-in, create writing activities, review/hone Pongo techniques, and share personal poems and relevant published pieces. Facilitating Poetry with Youth (50-90 minutes):Sessions begin with a warm up writing exercise in the form of a group poem. Then mentors are paired with youth, one-on-one, to create personal poetry. Teens may change from week to week, depending on the poetry site. Debrief with Poetry Mentors (15-30 minutes):Mentors check-in, type up and send copies of youth poems, and receive poetry writing prompts or activity creation assignments as “homework.” Selection ProcessPongo operates its projects in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Typically, mentor teams are formed in August, orientations occur in September, and projects run from September to June. However, volunteers are encouraged to apply year around in case positions open up. To apply: Review volunteer expectations above. Click the "respond" button on this post.
