Helping Link is a community-based non-profit agency located in Seattle's International District. Our mission is "to empower Vietnamese-Americans’ social adjustment, family stability, and self-sufficiency, while nurturing community service and youth leaders".

What is CHOICES?

CHOICES is an interactive decision-making workshop that focuses on keeping teens in school, motivating them toward their education and future, and introducing them to practical life skills, such as time management, money management, goal setting and self discipline to help them succeed.  Volunteers take students through interactive real-world exercises about the consequences of dropping out and the opportunities gained by staying in school. Started by a Seattle dad in 1984 to break through to his son, we have since served 6 million teens across the nation.
 

Techbridge Girls is an award-winning nonprofit that provides free after-school STEM education to girls in the South Seattle area. We are looking for women in STEM to become Techbridge Girl Role Models and come speak to the girls in our programs about the variety of work in STEM fields and any challenges they overcame during their career. With this model we hope to breakdown STEM stereotypes and encourage girls to realize that a STEM career is achievable.

We only ask that volunteers participate in a brief 30 minute online training session!

POSITION SUMMARY

Provide assistance to Front Desk staff with clerical duties, daily operations, program, services, scanning
documents, and small projects as needed. Greet families in the lobby of the South King County Family
Resource Center in Kent. Greet donors and assist with in-kind donation intake.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Vietnam Health Clinic (VHC) is currently recruiting for new board members in the Greater Seattle area and we want you to join our community of college students, healthcare professionals and motivated leaders who are looking to make a difference. No healthcare or Vietnamese affiliations needed.

VHC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving health care access and services to under-resourced populations of Vietnam, while promoting proactive learning and firsthand experience in primary care for our student members. VHC hosts mobile health clinics in rural Vietnam, providing services such as medical, dental, optometry, physical therapy, pharmaceutical and public health education. With the help of student members and healthcare professionals along with our local community, sponsors and volunteers, we have been able to provide aid to over 13,000 patients over the past ten years. We have now started to expand our health services to support low-income patients in the Greater Seattle area as well, starting with a partnership with International Community Health Services (ICHS).

What’s unique about VHC is that we integrate student mentorship into the goal of our mobile health clinic, providing student members with valuable clinical experience working alongside healthcare professionals in Vietnam. Leading up to the mobile health clinic, we train students to prepare for every aspect of an international mobile health clinic - from measuring vitals, taking medical history, interpret and assist our health professionals to cultural competency. In addition, all students work to raise funds, acquire supplies, and plan logistics for the trip; allowing them to develop important skills like communication, work ethic, leadership and teamwork. Since the creation of VHC, over 350 students have volunteered with us and more than 40% have gone on to successfully pursue careers in healthcare.

VHC board members provide valuable guidance and resources to strengthen the impact that our nonprofit has on the community while helping to guide the lives of young people. We are looking for board volunteers who want a meaningful way to contribute their time and skill that is reflective of their passion and values. A private nonprofit, KCSARC has been on the frontline for over 40 years working directly in sexual assault advocacy, treatment, public policy, and prevention.

The victims and families we help are as diverse as our many communities. 50% of our clients are under the age of 18. KCSARC has specialized programming for the Spanish-speaking community (Dando Voz) and innovative approaches to addressing the intersection of homelessness and sexual assault through Project360.

Sail Sand Point is looking for new board members! Sail Sand Point is a non-profit 501(c)(3) incorporated in 1998. Sail Sand Point is dedicated to making sailing and paddling accessible to everyone regardless of age, income, or ability. Friendly drivers needed to take local seniors to medical appointments!

Provide door to door service from seniors’ homes to medical appointments in your own vehicle. Must be comfortable navigating to new locations and contacting seniors on the phone. A twice monthly commitment of 1-2 hours is preferred.

Anyone over the age of 21 with a vehicle may apply.

When?

Most opportunities are during weekdays. We will work with your schedule.

Where?

Clients live in Sammamish and Issaquah. Appointments range from Sammamish and Issaquah into Bellevue, Kirkland and Seattle. We will work with your preferences for driving locations.

Homestead Community Land Trust is governed by 12 Delegates that provide governance and oversight of operations in furtherance of our founding purposes and mission.

As a Board member, you can help ensure Homestead grows as a vibrant, community-based effort providing a legacy of permanently affordable homes throughout King County. As a Board member of Homestead you will change lives and leave a legacy of affordability - permanently affordable homes - in our community.

Homestead’s board includes 1/3 seats for Homestead homeowners, 1/3 seats for Homestead general members, and 1/3 seats representing the community at large. In this way, governance of the organization is balanced to represent both the residents and the community as a whole. The board currently has 12 seats.

Lead educational hatchery tours for schools visiting the hatchery in the Fall and manage community outreach events for Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (FISH).

Fall is the busiest time of year for the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery! Chinook salmon begin to arrive in the Issaquah Creek in late August and early September and they continue to arrive along with coho salmon until mid-November. The salmon are returning to their birthplace to spawn and complete their incredible life cycles! During spawning season, FISH leads an average of 9,000 visitors on educational tours throughout the hatchery grounds. In early October, the hatchery will be a focal point of Issaquah's Salmon Days, celebrating the annual return of the salmon to Issaquah Creek.

FISH docents are needed for our fall tour season. Volunteers are needed for the following tasks:

About Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (FISH)

The Issaquah hatchery is the most visited of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s hatcheries, with thousands of visitors every year. As the region grapples with change to the natural environment, Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (FISH) highlights the presence of salmon in Issaquah Creek to cultivate a sense of wonder about these remarkable fish.

We strive to tell the story of salmon here in such a way that fosters a natural, life-long commitment to their well-being.

NEXT STEPS: We hold volunteer information nights the first Wednesday of every month from 6-7pm in the Watershed Center at the Hatchery. You can also email volunteer@issaquahfish.org for more information on send in an interest form from our website: www.issaquahfish.org/become-a-fish-volunteer.

REQUIREMENTS:

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to volunteer, with parental consent. All volunteers must pass a background check. Tour guides must be able to stand/walk for an hour at a time - tours are approximately 45 minutes long and require the tour guide to walk around the hatchery. Hatchery grounds are ADA accessible. All volunteers must attend the volunteer orientation on September 7th, 2019.

Immigrants and refugees from around the world seek a better life in the Pacific Northwest. Who can blame them? Great weather (usually), vibrant cultural and art scene, terrific outdoor recreation opportunities, tolerant society... Help our newest neighbors learn about and engage in these amenities by providing 1-1 English language tutoring. We provide free training. You get to experience a rich, cross-cultural relationship with someone you'd probably otherwise never meet.

With newly acquired information and tools, immigrants and refugees in turn contribute to and enrich our communities.

Volunteer Citizenship Preparation Tutors: 6-month commitment /once a week to provide instruction based on U.S. History and Civics to help students prepare for the United States citizenship exam.

To volunteer as citizenship tutor you must be at least 18 years old and fluent in English.

Hickman House is a confidentially located program for adult survivors of domestic violence with children, who have become homeless as a result of fleeing domestic violence. We provide fully furnished individual apartments, comprehensive case management for the entire family, financial empowerment education, a children's program, safety planning skills and housing search support. Hickman House has ten apartments for families, staff offices, a children's playroom and an outdoor courtyard. We rely on wonderful volunteers like you to do everything that we do!

Home visitors need assistance preparing children’s activities that are taken on visits. For more than 60 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been making a difference in the lives of youth facing adversity throughout King and Pierce counties. Volunteer mentors have been the foundation of much of the work we do, yet we recognize that many talented and driven individuals aren’t able to make the ongoing commitment mentoring requires.

The role of Donation Bin Ambassador requires less time and energy, but still contributes to a brighter future for our kids. To help fund mentoring programs, our donation center collects and resells clothing, shoes, and other household items. Each bin raises an average of $5500 per year, which goes to directly impacting the work we do and supporting local youth. As we grow to serve more kids, we need to add bins throughout King and Pierce counties.

God's Li'l Acre is a hygiene and community kitchen program in the Lake City Neighborhood of Seattle. As of February 2019, we began receiving City of Seattle Funding to expand hours of operation to be open from 9am - 4pm. Morning or afternoon volunteers are welcome, with a particular interest in volunteers from NE Seattle. If volunteers live in the area served by the day center, neighborly relationships and connections with people experiencing homelessness carry over into everyday interactions - in which we are no longer strangers to one another. 

Activities at GLA include: personal storage, community kitchen, clothing depot, laundry, showers, phone, mail distribution, internet, resources, referral and companionship. The number of guests who visit GLA range from 50-60 people. Guests generally range in age from 35-60 years, who are typically single male from a variety of backgrounds. Many guests could be described as chronically homeless with numerous challenges that make it difficult to find housing and employment. Although challenges may include disability, anger management, experiences of abuse, broken relationships, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental illnesses; volunteers and staff at GLA seek to affirm the creativity, resiliency, generosity, skills, assets and giftedness of each person. The center becomes a place of peace and respite amidst the chaos of peoples lives. In the dynamic of comings and goings of people, the staff of volunteers, interns and community ministers are witness to many experiences of grace. Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s #1 model for delivering Integrated Student Supports. The key to our mission is to implement our model of site coordination delivering Integrated Student Supports aimed at removing barriers, both social and academic, for students who are at high risk of dropping out. Our unique model places trained site coordinators inside schools to identify at-risk students. Working with school leaders and community partners, the site coordinator provides services and supports through two levels. One level focuses on school-wide needs and the second level provides individual case management supports to address the needs of high-risk students. Sewing Instructors teach beginning and intermediate machine and hand sewing techniques to participants as part of our life skills programming at the North Seattle Family Resource Center. We are Lake City Seniors, a partner site of Sound Generations. We are growing a new and exceptionally welcoming intercultural senior center at the Lake City Community Center in partnership with Seattle Parks & Recreation, Hunger Intervention Program, Sea Mar Community Health Clinics and Chinese Information & Service Center.

Our program offers free and low-cost activities (in English, Spanish, Mandarin & Cantonese) and a hot meal to older adults every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We are in need of volunteer assistance to support the morning staff person to set-up our Snack Table, Resources Table and Front Desk.  This role also includes being available at the Front Desk to offer a friendly greeting, direct participants to activities, answer questions and be open to having funny and interesting conversations. :)

As an Office Volunteer, you will work directly with the Sales Department and Science on Wheels Program to reach out to schools who have scheduled outreach programming for their students. Essential duties include reminding schools that their paperwork is due (via email), checking confirmed schedules for accuracy, and reaching out to schools to address scheduling errors. This is a great opportunity for anyone with interest in furthering their communication skills via phone and email. This is a temporary role that runs through the school year and ends in June 2019. Volunteers need to be available either Mondays or Tuesdays in order to be considered for this position.

The Polack Food Bank On Capitol Hill operates a home-delivery program, providing healthy food and toiletries once a month to clients unable to come to the Food Bank.

Volunteers will prepare, load and deliver needed items to client homes on a designated route. A personal vehicle is required for this position.

The purpose of doing Supermarket Saturday food drives is to receive much-needed donations of food for the FamilyWorks food bank. These events involve interacting with community members and handing out flyers indicating the types of canned food the Food Bank needs. We also receive food donations from shoppers. The Board of Directors governs the Women’s Business Incubator, a Washington State nonprofit 501(c)3. WBI is the parent organization of The Inc., a Community Coworking and Playschool center in the Green Lake neighborhood of Seattle.  The country’s first non-profit coworking space with on-site childcare, The Inc. provides parents the support network of a shared professional workspace with quality childcare included. All of our pets have special needs in some way and some need shots or medication once or twice a day.

CATS: We are seeking cat foster homes for cats who might not be real social but they are 50-75% socialized. They need to get use to people picking them up and the home environment. Some cats may be domesticated but had hair loss so are not that adoptable yet. All cats must be inside only with no dogs in the family.

DOGS: We are seeking dog foster homes mainly in the winter.  All foster homes need a fenced yard and no small children in the family. A home visit is required prior to fostering.

On an on-going basis, we collect items for the Humane Society's dinner/auctions which are held twice a year. If you have any new items to donate yourself, or can help by calling or visiting companies to obtain items, please contact us. Our auctions are normally the beginning of December and the beginning of May.  Proceeds are used to fund animal food for our food bank and vet care for shelter animals and those of the low-income on food stamps.

One of our missions is to run an animal food bank for the low income and also provide veterinary care for these animals. We obtain the food and cost of medical care by having tables outside of supermarkets and pet stores to bring in food donations and dollars for medical care. A pet food drive could also be done at your Church, a school, or by other means. We provide a banner and information. It wo If people are under age 16, they do need to be accompanied by an adult.

Kids4Peace is seeking leaders from diverse backgrounds to join our Seattle Chapter Board. The board provides strategic direction and local oversight for youth interfaith and peacebuilding programs in Seattle, one of seven Kids4Peace chapters in North America and Jerusalem. Our core program serves Muslim, Jewish, and Christian youth in 6th through 12th grade with monthly meetings, overnight retreats, and summer experiences, all of which focus on interfaith education, dialogue & leadership skills, social change, and community building. Public workshops and outreach programming serve an additional 400 youth annually. Through this work, the board helps develop young leaders who are building stronger communities in Seattle.

Kids4Peace Seattle is entering its sixth year. After a successful program launch, we seek energetic, passionate board members to join a growing team during this time of program build-out. Sidewalk Pantry volunteers offer new essential items (socks, clothing, hygiene products, etc) to houseless neighbors in Seattle. They also provide informative guides and maps for houseless neighbors to find services.

What is Sidewalk Pantry?

Each Friday our team delivers new essential items to houseless neighbors in 3 rotating neighborhoods: Belltown, Capitol Hill, and the U District. While distributing items, we gather feedback from these neighbors so we can always bring the most useful items at any given time. We also use this time to provide information and maps for our program called The Pledge, in which businesses all over Seattle offer free services, from coffee or food to clothing and haircuts, for houseless neighbors.

Seattle Children's Theatre is looking for ushers for our upcoming season (Sept. 2018 - May 2019). Families can usher together (see age restrictions below). Also an easy way to earn Community Service Hours for school! Ushers take tickets and assist patrons before the show, during intermission & after the show. Usually, you get to see the show the day you are ushering. Ushers must complete a 30 minute orientation session at the beginning of their first shift. You must be at least 8 years old to usher with an adult or 14 years old to usher on your own.

The Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship Fund (SADSF) honors President Barack Obama’s mother who attended Eckstein Middle School, Mercer Island High School, and the University of Washington (1955-1961). Dr. Dunham’s commitment to social activism, global citizenship and educational excellence was exemplary, as she became a pioneering anthropologist working to improve the lives of marginalized communities around the world. The Fund’s mission is to empower young women to be leaders and active world citizens through education and service.

Each year, we award $5,000 college scholarships to graduating high school women who demonstrate a commitment to these values. Originally created for Dr. Dunham’s high school alma mater, we have expanded the program to Rainier Beach High School. Our vision is to continue to expand this scholarship opportunity to other high schools in the Seattle area as we plan our Tenth Anniversary celebration for the spring 2019.

The middle school years are a tough time for young people. This time of transition is filled with myriad changes: increased responsibilities, peer pressure, confusion and lack of motivation, in addition to natural changes. This is the time when young adults are building their self-esteem and their confidence. Unfortunately, many students go through these changes alone because they don’t know where to turn. They feel misunderstood by their peers, or maybe have difficult relationships with their family. These formative years are when they love and rely on friends and need the most authentic support.

This is where you are important. As a volunteer mentor, you are that friend and support system. Through spending time together, having fun and enjoying each other, your student partner will become more confident and comfortable in his or her own skin. Your mentee will have a glimpse of your life and experiences, which many times are vastly different than theirs. In return, you will be welcomed into your student’s life, as you create the foundation of newfound knowledge and friendship.

As a mentor, you will spend time with your youth three times a month: twice one-on-one, and once during our monthly group workshops. Even if you are busy, if you have four free hours a month, you can make a difference.

A key part of our program is building a community for our youth; along with one-on-one time spent with you, everyone attends monthly program sponsored outings. While these outings appear to be simply for fun, they have a large learning component, and in them we discuss topics important to our students, such as body image and confidence, bullying, communication, dating, and family. These outings are scheduled once a month and vary in location to allow for variety to the group and scheduling.

EEC works as a Washington education “watchdog,” keeping an ear in our communities and eye on our elected officials. As both emerging practices and negative trends appear in schools, the EEC bubbles up this crucial information, laying the groundwork for effective problem-solving, and  shining light on actions that affect our kids.

In other words, we act as the bridge between real people experiencing the opportunity gap and the decision makers who want to close it. Instead of gate-keeping, we work to gate-break.

MOBILIZATION & OUTREACH

BETSY DEVOS COUNTER RALLY:  When US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos came to Bellevue in October 2017, EEC organized thousands of public
education advocates to show that Washington chooses students over profit.  We built a coalition of 26 organizations, brought together elected officials and community leaders, and spread the message in over 1,000 media hits nationwide.  EEC mobilizes our communities to take action. We organize protests and rallies to engage our communities, demonstrate to decision-makers the need for equity, and strengthen the political power of those who have historically been ignored and exploited.

EQUITY RALLY:  Over 1,000 participants from across Washington state gathered on the Capitol steps in Olympia, in January 2017, with the unified ask to the Legislature to fully fund education and critical state services. We met with legislators, and passed out the EEC Equity Rally Proclamation throughout the day.

Foundation for Healthy Generations (Healthy Gen)—a statewide leader working to ensure all people have an equal opportunity to lead a healthy life—is currently recruiting Board members. The Freedom Education Project Puget Sound (FEPPS) is a small nonprofit that offers a college program leading to an Associate of Arts and Science degree inside the Washington Correction Center for Women (WCCW). Our mission is to provide access to a rigorous college education to incarcerated women in Washington and create pathways to higher education after women are released from prison. We envision a world in which people in prison can realize their academic potential through access to meaningful, sustained, high-quality educational opportunities; where a culture of punishment is replaced by a culture of human dignity. Photos may include: fundraising, comunity, and employee events, and we will always provide list of photos that we would like to have captured. Previous photography experience is required.

The Seattle Lighthouse is looking for someone with video experience to record footage that will help us share our story with our community. This will be occasional and may include employees on the job, or covering special events.

TPA needs short term volunteers to help launch its Savings Initiative Project. The Savings Initiative
Project is a savings intervention for families receiving low-income benefits through the TANF program here in Washington.

Over a yearlong development process, TPA created Money Powerup Packs, an event ready kit for frontline staff to easily implement financial curriculum into their current programs. TPA needs 3-4 volunteers to help assemble packs to be sent out to partner sites. Volunteer participation in this opportunity is critical to the success of this pilot program.

In early testing, partner’s have reported that Money Powerup Packs help their families start meaningful
conversations about financial topics, provide frontline staff with the resources and confidence to help
families engage in their finances and make saving for the future more tangible for their parents.

Volunteers will meet in TPA’s Innovation Lab in Pioneer Square. Duties include: cutting, laminating and
assembling event kits.

Yoga Behind Bars

Board of Directors Job Description
Yoga Behind Bars (YBB) is looking for engaged leaders with an interest in trauma-informed approaches to criminal justice reform. We are a small Seattle-based nonprofit with 18 programs for youth and adults all over Washington State in need of board members with the skills and commitment to steward us through a phase of rapid growth. Current areas of focus include the launch of our online learning platform, program evaluation, increasing our budget to $500k a year, building corporate relationships.

Our Mission: Yoga behind Bars shares trauma-informed yoga and meditation with incarcerated people to promote rehabilitation, personal transformation, and a more just society for all. 

Our Vision: We are committed to reimagining the criminal justice system. Most people in prison and jail suffer from chronic and complex trauma, stemming from early adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Yet there are very few programs and resources offered to safely integrate this unresolved trauma. This is where we come in. Our approach to compassionate rehabilitative programming is intended to shift the culture in prison from punishment to healing, harm to transformation, and recidivism to reintegration.

As a "Friendly Visitor" for our Outreach Program, you will be matched up by our Social Worker with a senior who has expressed feelings of loneliness and isolation, and has difficulties getting out. This position is of a very personal nature, and we need volunteers who are dedicated to providing consistent attention that creates a positive experience as well as developing a long-term relationship with their matched senior. The Outreach Volunteer is supervised by the Social Worker who reserves the right to use their discretion about making a match with the ultimate safety of the senior always at the heart of the match.
