Opportunities From: United Way of King County

Volunteer: Enumclaw, Do You Want to Make a Difference in the Lives of Seniors?

Are you looking for something fun to do... do you like to drive... do you want to make a difference and help people? Volunteer driving is an opportunity to help seniors in your community. You can control the amount of time you want to be involved. Most volunteers drive once a week, some twice a week, others every other week. We are very flexible and will work with your schedule.

Using your own vehicle, you would help older adults maintain their independence by taking them to much needed medical appointments. Clients greatly appreciate their improved access to medical care, meaningful interactions with caring volunteers, and increased peace of mind. Unfortunately, the program does not have enough drivers to meet the growing demand for transportation from King County seniors.

Our volunteer drivers do a lot more than drive! By volunteering with Sound Generations Volunteer Transportation Program, drivers not only provide needed transportation but companionship for both the senior and the volunteer.

We really need YOU! Help make a huge difference in the lives of seniors near you by becoming a volunteer driver.

For more information please click the "respond" button and we will follow up with you!

Volunteer: Federal Way Volunteer Drivers in Demand

Volunteer Transportation is a program of Sound Generations, a non-profit organization working to help seniors remain safely independent and connected to their communities. Every week, there are a growing number of older adults in need of transportation but not enough volunteers to do it all. It is heartbreaking to know that for many, the only barrier to accessing medical care is just a ride away.

Getting to the doctor’s office is a daunting task for many local seniors. Poor vision or medical conditions prevent them from driving; limited mobility makes it impossible to take the bus; taxis come with prohibitive costs; and loved ones have full-time jobs that render them unavailable to help. So who do they turn to? Fortunately, volunteer drivers can fill the gap.

Help make a huge difference in the lives of seniors near you by becoming a volunteer driver. This opportunity is extremely flexible, allowing volunteers to pick the days, times, frequency, and areas they wish to drive. Help more seniors get "on the road" to improved health and peace of mind by becoming a volunteer today!

For more information please click the "respond" button and we will follow up with you!

"You have done wonders for my life. I would not have been able to stay in my own home for as long as I have without your help. Thank you for all you do." Jeanne, 84

Volunteer: City Year Seattle / King County is growing its Board!

City Year believes in the power of young people.

We know that all students can succeed.  But, many students growing up in low-income communities face adversity that affects their ability to come to school every day, ready to learn.

City Year places teams of AmeriCorps members in high-need schools full-time, alongside teachers, to provide individualized academic and social emotional supports to help students thrive and to improve the school-wide learning environment.

City Year’s Seattle / King County site currently serves over 4600 students in 10 elementary and middle schools around South Seattle.

What is the mission of City Year’s Site Board?

The mission of a City Year site board is to serve as a highly-engaged and deeply-committed team of volunteer leaders who tap their collective wisdom, resources, and experiences to enable City Year to achieve impact, scale, and success in their community.

What makes the City Year Seattle / King County Board an attractive opportunity?

First and foremost, impact. You will have an opportunity to engage and make a difference in thousands of lives across multiple generations of leaders locally and nationally: Board, staff, AmeriCorps members, students, champions, and partners. Your leadership will be a driving force in helping students stay in school and on track to graduate college - and be career ready. Second, you will have access to a broad, local and national professional network through City Year’s corporate, civic, and private partners, 28 peer site boards, and the national board of trustees. Third, you’ll have the pride of serving with an organization with strong values and a program backed by research, community support, and results. You’ll also have a lot of fun along the way!

What are the core roles of a City Year Site Board member?

We’re looking for leaders who want to make a difference in our communities, and are working to build a Board that is as diverse as the communities we serve.

It is important to clarify CYSKC’s site board is advisory in nature. That means although site boards play an important role in building the organization locally and nationally, they do not have formal legal authority or fiduciary responsibilities.

We understand that City Year is one part of your life so we work to create individually sustainable engagement plans so members can easily balance professional and personal commitments. There are many ways you can impact City Year’s mission and success as a board member; however, here are three key ways we ask each board member to apply their expertise, leadership, and time:

Personal Connection: Develop an understanding of the mission, vision, strategies, and impact of City Year, both nationally and locally. You will receive onboarding support and any materials or experiences you need to build and strengthen this bond. Engagement: Prepare and engage in site board meetings (every-other-month) to provide input on site strategy, plans, and challenges. Actively participate in key CYSKC events throughout the year. Advocacy & Fundraising: Prioritize City Year as one of you top three philanthropic investments. Be bold and proud in advocating for City Year within your personal and professional networks and with prospective champions and partners (staff provides all supporting coaching, messaging and materials).

Volunteer: Donation Bin Ambassador

For more than 60 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been making a difference in the lives of youth facing adversity throughout King and Pierce counties. Volunteer mentors have been the foundation of much of the work we do, yet we recognize that many talented and driven individuals aren’t able to make the ongoing commitment mentoring requires.

The role of Donation Bin Ambassador requires less time and energy, but still contributes to a brighter future for our kids. To help fund mentoring programs, our donation center collects and resells clothing, shoes, and other household items. Each bin raises an average of $5500 per year, which goes to directly impacting the work we do and supporting local youth. As we grow to serve more kids, we need to add bins throughout King and Pierce counties.

If you believe your workplace or community group would be willing to host a Big Brothers Big Sisters donation bin, we’d love to know! As a Donation Bin Ambassador, you would be responsible for promoting the program to your coworkers and community, as well as informing Big Brothers Big Sisters when the bin is full so we can schedule pick up. The time commitment is limited, but you can make a major impact!

Volunteer: Day Center Hosting

God's Li'l Acre is a hygiene and community kitchen program in the Lake City Neighborhood of Seattle. As of February 2019, we began receiving City of Seattle Funding to expand hours of operation to be open from 9am - 4pm. Morning or afternoon volunteers are welcome, with a particular interest in volunteers from NE Seattle. If volunteers live in the area served by the day center, neighborly relationships and connections with people experiencing homelessness carry over into everyday interactions - in which we are no longer strangers to one another.

Activities at GLA include: personal storage, community kitchen, clothing depot, laundry, showers, phone, mail distribution, internet, resources, referral and companionship. The number of guests who visit GLA range from 50-60 people. Guests generally range in age from 35-60 years, who are typically single male from a variety of backgrounds. Many guests could be described as chronically homeless with numerous challenges that make it difficult to find housing and employment. Although challenges may include disability, anger management, experiences of abuse, broken relationships, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental illnesses; volunteers and staff at GLA seek to affirm the creativity, resiliency, generosity, skills, assets and giftedness of each person. The center becomes a place of peace and respite amidst the chaos of peoples lives. In the dynamic of comings and goings of people, the staff of volunteers, interns and community ministers are witness to many experiences of grace. The center practices modalities of person-centred, trauma-informed companionship with persons experiencing homelessness.

More About What We Do

Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s #1 model for delivering Integrated Student Supports. The key to our mission is to implement our model of site coordination delivering Integrated Student Supports aimed at removing barriers, both social and academic, for students who are at high risk of dropping out. Our unique model places trained site coordinators inside schools to identify at-risk students. Working with school leaders and community partners, the site coordinator provides services and supports through two levels. One level focuses on school-wide needs and the second level provides individual case management supports to address the needs of high-risk students. Our site coordinators help link existing services to students for their identified needs. CIS recruits and trains hundreds of community volunteers each year to work as mentors, speakers and tutors who provide consistent adult guidance, life skills modeling, academic assistance and set the expectation for success in school and in life. Across Washington, more than 73,000 students were served by Communities In Schools Affiliates last year.

Volunteer: Sidewalk Pantry Volunteer

Be:Seattle is searching for outreach volunteers to take part in our weekly Sidewalk Pantry program.

What will I do as a volunteer?

Sidewalk Pantry volunteers offer new essential items (socks, clothing, hygiene products, etc) to houseless neighbors in Seattle. They also provide informative guides and maps for houseless neighbors to find services.

What is Sidewalk Pantry?

Each Friday our team delivers new essential items to houseless neighbors in 3 rotating neighborhoods: Belltown, Capitol Hill, and the U District. While distributing items, we gather feedback from these neighbors so we can always bring the most useful items at any given time. We also use this time to provide information and maps for our program called The Pledge, in which businesses all over Seattle offer free services, from coffee or food to clothing and haircuts, for houseless neighbors.

Learn more about The Pledge at seattlepledge.com.

Volunteer: Helping people. Changing lives. Be Empowered – Become a mentor!

The middle school years are a tough time for young people. This time of transition is filled with myriad changes: increased responsibilities, peer pressure, confusion and lack of motivation, in addition to natural changes. This is the time when young adults are building their self-esteem and their confidence. Unfortunately, many students go through these changes alone because they don’t know where to turn. They feel misunderstood by their peers, or maybe have difficult relationships with their family. These formative years are when they love and rely on friends and need the most authentic support.

This is where you are important. As a volunteer mentor, you are that friend and support system. Through spending time together, having fun and enjoying each other, your student partner will become more confident and comfortable in his or her own skin. Your mentee will have a glimpse of your life and experiences, which many times are vastly different than theirs. In return, you will be welcomed into your student’s life, as you create the foundation of newfound knowledge and friendship.

As a mentor, you will spend time with your youth three times a month: twice one-on-one, and once during our monthly group workshops. Even if you are busy, if you have four free hours a month, you can make a difference.

A key part of our program is building a community for our youth; along with one-on-one time spent with you, everyone attends monthly program sponsored outings. While these outings appear to be simply for fun, they have a large learning component, and in them we discuss topics important to our students, such as body image and confidence, bullying, communication, dating, and family. These outings are scheduled once a month and vary in location to allow for variety to the group and scheduling.

Think back to your middle school experience. How amazing would it have been to have had a mentor – a person dedicated to your success – to look up to and from whom to gain benefit? By giving just hours each month, you can become a permanent good in a young person’s life. We all deserve to become the best version of ourselves that we can be.  Sign up for more information and you could give a middle school youth the love, support, and friendship they need.

Volunteer: Join the Revolution for Education in Washington State

We're excited you're interested in joining the Equity in Education Coalition community!!!

Below you'll find our organizations missions, vision, and accomplishments to date, as well as what your role could be in joining us!

The Equity In Education Coalition (EEC) is Washington State’s largest civil rights organization focused on closing the opportunity gap and striving to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for children of color.

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY
We work with local, regional and state legislatures to ensure that laws, policies, and programs work for kids often trapped in the opportunity and
achievement gap.

In the last few years, we've worked to fund and/or pass:

Learning Assistance Program Discipline Bill Early Learning Bill Expanded Learning Opportunity Council

POLICY & ACCOUNTABILITY

EEC works as a Washington education “watchdog,” keeping an ear in our communities and eye on our elected officials. As both emerging practices and negative trends appear in schools, the EEC bubbles up this crucial information, laying the groundwork for effective problem-solving, and  shining light on actions that affect our kids.

In other words, we act as the bridge between real people experiencing the opportunity gap and the decision makers who want to close it. Instead of gate-keeping, we work to gate-break.

MOBILIZATION & OUTREACH

BETSY DEVOS COUNTER RALLY:  When US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos came to Bellevue in October 2017, EEC organized thousands of public
education advocates to show that Washington chooses students over profit.  We built a coalition of 26 organizations, brought together elected officials and community leaders, and spread the message in over 1,000 media hits nationwide.  EEC mobilizes our communities to take action. We organize protests and rallies to engage our communities, demonstrate to decision-makers the need for equity, and strengthen the political power of those who have historically been ignored and exploited.

EQUITY RALLY:  Over 1,000 participants from across Washington state gathered on the Capitol steps in Olympia, in January 2017, with the unified ask to the Legislature to fully fund education and critical state services. We met with legislators, and passed out the EEC Equity Rally Proclamation throughout the day.

Volunteer: Food Justice Event Interns Wanted for Summer!

Work with a local grassroots food justice organization to plan our annual fundraising event!

CAGJ’s 12th annual Strengthening Local Economies Everywhere! (SLEE!) Dinner will take place on September 29th, 2018 at the University Christian Church in Seattle’s University District.

Community Alliance for Global Justice (CAGJ) is a Seattle-based, grassroots, volunteer-run organization whose mission is to strengthen the global food sovereignty movement.

SLEE! is so much more than just a delicious, locally sourced, Fair Trade meal: it is a powerful community event where we inspire people to take action. This year, we are thrilled to feature Edgar Franks delivering the keynote, “The Legacy We Inherit: Luchando por una Vida AgroEcológica,” reflecting on agroecology as a way of life. Edgar organizes farmworkers with Community to Community Development in Bellingham, WA.

We need a team of interns to contribute to the vision and make it even more spectacular than past years! Learn valuable skills in the areas of nonprofit development and fundraising, community engagement and outreach, communications, and event planning. The following positions are available:

Dessert & Silent Auctions Coordinators: Coordinate a group of volunteers and interns to do outreach to supportive contacts for dessert auction and silent auction donations.

Dessert & Silent Auction Outreach: Email and follow-up with businesses and CAGJ members to put together silent auction packages and dessert auction. Need to be able to make day-time calls.

Publicity: Help create promotional materials and conduct outreach to our Community Partners to publicize the event.

Food & Farm Outreach: Contact the many farmers, fisherfolks, creameries, wineries, breweries, and others who support CAGJ with their amazing goods to see if they can help out this year.

Table Captain Outreach: This essential role follows up with our valued CAGJ membership requesting that they become Table Captains to provide an extra level of financial support at our dinner. You will be provided with all the contacts and outreach materials you need.

We are currently accepting interns for summer quarter if you would like academic credit, or a minimum of 10 weeks between now and mid-October. Minimum of 3-5 hours per week.
