Volunteer: Donation Bin Ambassador

For more than 60 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been making a difference in the lives of youth facing adversity throughout King and Pierce counties. Volunteer mentors have been the foundation of much of the work we do, yet we recognize that many talented and driven individuals aren’t able to make the ongoing commitment mentoring requires.

The role of Donation Bin Ambassador requires less time and energy, but still contributes to a brighter future for our kids. To help fund mentoring programs, our donation center collects and resells clothing, shoes, and other household items. Each bin raises an average of $5500 per year, which goes to directly impacting the work we do and supporting local youth. As we grow to serve more kids, we need to add bins throughout King and Pierce counties.

If you believe your workplace or community group would be willing to host a Big Brothers Big Sisters donation bin, we’d love to know! Many guests could be described as chronically homeless with numerous challenges that make it difficult to find housing and employment. Although challenges may include disability, anger management, experiences of abuse, broken relationships, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental illnesses; volunteers and staff at GLA seek to affirm the creativity, resiliency, generosity, skills, assets and giftedness of each person. Our program offers free and low-cost activities (in English, Spanish, Mandarin & Cantonese) and a hot meal to older adults every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Public workshops and outreach programming serve an additional 400 youth annually. Through this work, the board helps develop young leaders who are building stronger communities in Seattle.

Kids4Peace Seattle is entering its sixth year. After a successful program launch, we seek energetic, passionate board members to join a growing team during this time of program build-out. Board members will also play a key role in further developing our public programming and a new partnership model with local religious congregations to dramatically increase the number of youth we serve.

Background and Experience

Commitment to social change. Dr. Dunham’s commitment to social activism, global citizenship and educational excellence was exemplary, as she became a pioneering anthropologist working to improve the lives of marginalized communities around the world. The Fund’s mission is to empower young women to be leaders and active world citizens through education and service.

Each year, we award $5,000 college scholarships to graduating high school women who demonstrate a commitment to these values. Originally created for Dr. Dunham’s high school alma mater, we have expanded the program to Rainier Beach High School. Our vision is to continue to expand this scholarship opportunity to other high schools in the Seattle area as we plan our Tenth Anniversary celebration for the spring 2019.

We are a hands-on, working board with no paid staff. We plan and implement our annual budget, fundraisers, scholarship programs, and annual event. By joining our Board, you will play a critical role in helping to develop the next generation of young, globally engaged women leaders.

Our vision is to continue to expand this scholarship opportunity to other high schools in the Seattle area as we plan our Tenth Anniversary celebration for the spring 2019.

We are a hands-on, working board with no paid staff. We plan and implement our annual budget, fundraisers, scholarship programs, and annual event. By joining our Board, you will play a critical role in helping to develop the next generation of young, globally engaged women leaders.

This is the time when young adults are building their self-esteem and their confidence. Unfortunately, many students go through these changes alone because they don’t know where to turn. They feel misunderstood by their peers, or maybe have difficult relationships with their family. These formative years are when they love and rely on friends and need the most authentic support.

This is where you are important. As a volunteer mentor, you are that friend and support system. Through spending time together, having fun and enjoying each other, your student partner will become more confident and comfortable in his or her own skin. Your mentee will have a glimpse of your life and experiences, which many times are vastly different than theirs. In return, you will be welcomed into your student’s life, as you create the foundation of newfound knowledge and friendship.

As a mentor, you will spend time with your youth three times a month: twice one-on-one, and once during our monthly group workshops. Even if you are busy, if you have four free hours a month, you can make a difference.

A key part of our program is building a community for our youth; along with one-on-one time spent with you, everyone attends monthly program sponsored outings. While these outings appear to be simply for fun, they have a large learning component, and in them we discuss topics important to our students, such as body image and confidence, bullying, communication, dating, and family. These outings are scheduled once a month and vary in location to allow for variety to the group and scheduling.

BETSY DEVOS COUNTER RALLY:  When US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos came to Bellevue in October 2017, EEC organized thousands of public
education advocates to show that Washington chooses students over profit.  We built a coalition of 26 organizations, brought together elected officials and community leaders, and spread the message in over 1,000 media hits nationwide.  EEC mobilizes our communities to take action. We organize protests and rallies to engage our communities, demonstrate to decision-makers the need for equity, and strengthen the political power of those who have historically been ignored and exploited.

EQUITY RALLY:  Over 1,000 participants from across Washington state gathered on the Capitol steps in Olympia, in January 2017, with the unified ask to the Legislature to fully fund education and critical state services. We met with legislators, and passed out the EEC Equity Rally Proclamation throughout the day.

Project is a savings intervention for families receiving low-income benefits through the TANF program here in Washington.

Over a yearlong development process, TPA created Money Powerup Packs, an event ready kit for frontline staff to easily implement financial curriculum into their current programs. TPA needs 3-4 volunteers to help assemble packs to be sent out to partner sites. Volunteer participation in this opportunity is critical to the success of this pilot program.

In early testing, partner’s have reported that Money Powerup Packs help their families start meaningful
conversations about financial topics, provide frontline staff with the resources and confidence to help
families engage in their finances and make saving for the future more tangible for their parents.

Our Vision: We are committed to reimagining the criminal justice system. Most people in prison and jail suffer from chronic and complex trauma, stemming from early adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Yet there are very few programs and resources offered to safely integrate this unresolved trauma. This is where we come in. Our approach to compassionate rehabilitative programming is intended to shift the culture in prison from punishment to healing, harm to transformation, and recidivism to reintegration.

Business Impact NW grows businesses that create jobs in underserved communities, through free technical assistance and mission-based lending to a targeted audience of Women-, Veteran-, Persons of Color-, Immigrants and Refugees-, and LGBT- small business owners and entrepreneurs in Washington and Northern Oregon.  Based in Seattle since 1997, we are looking for 2-3 members to be part of our inaugural development committee.  

We have a mission-driven professional board and a Director of Development & Communications that this committee will support.  The role of the Committee is to support the organization and the Development Department in the annual fundraising plan (including feedback during its annual review, revision, and execution).

Top Development Needs Committee Will Help to Address

Activities & Expectations may include:

SLEE! is so much more than just a delicious, locally sourced, Fair Trade meal: it is a powerful community event where we inspire people to take action. This year, we are thrilled to feature Edgar Franks delivering the keynote, “The Legacy We Inherit: Luchando por una Vida AgroEcológica,” reflecting on agroecology as a way of life. Edgar organizes farmworkers with Community to Community Development in Bellingham, WA.

We need a team of interns to contribute to the vision and make it even more spectacular than past years! Learn valuable skills in the areas of nonprofit development and fundraising, community engagement and outreach, communications, and event planning. The following positions are available:

Dessert & Silent Auctions Coordinators: Coordinate a group of volunteers and interns to do outreach to supportive contacts for dessert auction and silent auction donations.

Dessert & Silent Auction Outreach: Email and follow-up with businesses and CAGJ members to put together silent auction packages and dessert auction. Need to be able to make day-time calls.

Come join the Room Circus team!  Room Circus's Board of Directors is an "active board" responsible for activities such as fundraising, marketing, financial over-site, supporting staff, and most importantly, being ambassadors to the community. The VP Board meets the fourth Monday of the month, in the Judkins Park neighborhood, and maintains email discussions and pop-up meetings between formal meetings as needed. Current needs:

- Secretary (VP board position): Primary duty is taking minutes at board meetings. Signatures are required periodically. A few other minor duties.   

- Treasurer (VP board position): Our office manager takes care of the day-to-day financial matters, but the treasurer would help with the more global plan. Treasurer is needed for "check & balances" to make sure we have two eyes on the flow of money.

- Corporate Sponsorship (board position): Seeks corporate sponsorships.

- Grants (board or volunteer positions): (a) writing grants, (b) seeking out new grants, &/or (c) tracking grants. Ideally, we'd have a person in change of grants (track them), and that person would have volunteers seek out and write grants.

- Volunteer Coordinator (board position): Recruits and manages volunteers.

- Events (board member & volunteers): We usually have 2-3 fundraisers per year with approximately 25-80 guests. Board member helps organize events. Volunteer assists with duties such as: mailings, set-up, assist at event, and clean-up.

Organization: Room Circus

Come join the Room Circus team!  Room Circus's Board of Directors is an "active board" responsible for activities such as fundraising, marketing, financial over-site, supporting staff, and most importantly, being ambassadors to the community. The VP Board meets the fourth Monday of the month, in the Judkins Park neighborhood, and maintains email discussions and pop-up meetings between formal meetings as needed. General Board members meet quarterly, although they are welcome to attend the monthly meetings as well. Although we have our separate functions, we work as a team and help one another when needed. 

Current needs:

- Secretary (VP board position): Primary duty is taking minutes at board meetings. Signatures are required periodically. A few other minor duties.   

- Treasurer (VP board position): Our office manager takes care of the day-to-day financial matters, but the treasurer would help with the more global plan. Treasurer is needed for "check & balances" to make sure we have two eyes on the flow of money.

- Corporate Sponsorship (board position): Seeks corporate sponsorships.

- Grants (board or volunteer positions): (a) writing grants, (b) seeking out new grants, &/or (c) tracking grants. Ideally, we'd have a person in change of grants (track them), and that person would have volunteers seek out and write grants.

- Volunteer Coordinator (board position): Recruits and manages volunteers.

- Events (board member & volunteers): We usually have 2-3 fundraisers per year with approximately 25-80 guests. Board member helps organize events. Volunteer assists with duties such as: mailings, set-up, assist at event, and clean-up.

- General Board Member or volunteer: There are several other tasks that can be done as a board member or volunteer.

Do you knit or crochet?  

Every year Assistance League of the Eastside volunteers host shopping events for 3,500-4,000 students in need to shop for new school clothing, shoes and coats.  After shopping students delight in selecting a handmade hat or scarf.  

We accept donations of knitted/crocheted hats and scarves to fit students in grades K-12.  All colors, designs and styles are desired, but Seahawks and local college (UW, WSU) colors are especially sought after.

Anyone can participate in knitting for students in need.  Not a knitter?  We also accept donations of yarn so that residents of assisted living and senior communities who are on a limited budget but want to knit can participate.

Experts in The Educurious Expert Network are mentors who provide career awareness, exploration and preparation activities like mock and informational interviews to high school aged students, ages 14 to 18. Position Summary

Students pose questions about careers or subjects they are interested in, and experts share stories about their education, industry, career path, challenges, and successes. Students are able to practice the communication and collaboration skills they are learning in the classroom with professionals employed in the industries where they aspire to work.

Duties and Responsibilities

In-person events are designed to be responsive of the needs and interests of students. The following are examples of potential responsibilities for experts:

Attend in-person networking event(s) with students in Renton and Federal Way or participate in a mock or informational interview via video conferencing. Introduce yourself by sharing your professional experience, career pathway, hobbies, and interests. Participate in a mock or informational interview (with the help of Educurious). Answer student questions honestly. Offer feedback to address what the student did well and areas they can improve during their informational or mock interview. Share resources, information, contacts, websites, books, etc. to help further student exploration and research.

Experts should be able to attend at least one event throughout the course of the program, January 2018 – June 2018.

Support

Experts receive direct support and onboarding from an Expert Relationship Manager including:

Networking handbook and onboarding session. Best practices for working with diverse high school students. Curated list of interview questions to ask students (if applicable). Assessment forms to guide feedback discussions with students (if applicable).

 Qualifications and Skills

Experts in the Educurious Expert Network should have an interest in supporting young people in high school to develop professional and career skills. Mentors are not required to have prior mentoring experience, but should have:

Self-awareness of personal and professional path, growth and goals and enthusiasm for sharing career knowledge with others. Ability to provide constructive feedback and model professional reflection. Passion for identifying, validating and encouraging positive qualities and development in others. A high school diploma or GED. Additional professional credential or higher education is preferred. Minimum of 2-3 years of work experience, increasing levels of responsibility is preferred. Professionals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The ESL Instructor provides specialized instruction for the purposes of developing the students‘ ability to effectively acquire the English language and to utilize the English language in their daily lives.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English in the Core Curriculum Content Standards and Washington state Adult Learning Standards. Instruction must be consistent and coordinated with the Comprehensive Adults Student Assessment System (CASAS) so that students meet and exceed learning targets.
 Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student’s ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets
 Administers academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student’s progress in meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition. Maintains complete and accurate records of student’s progress and evidence of growth and progress.
 Provides a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging instructional strategies.
 Attends professional English Language Acquisition meetings and attends staff meetings as may be requested or as established by the agency.
 Advocates for the program needs that are required to meet the learning needs of English learner.
 Performs such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the supervisor.
 Helps navigate students to the appropriate agency personnel in order to address needs and concerns beyond the instructor’s ability to assist.
 Collects and track student’s daily attendance.
 Supervises volunteers and AmeriCorp members.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
 TESOL or TEFL Certification
 Associate’s degree in English Language and/or related field, and 2 years’ professional experience in ESL instruction and/or employment/vocational training field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
 Be able to work in coordination with other team members
 Prior experience working with refugee and immigrant clients
 Demonstrated computer skills including knowledge of Excel, word processing and email programs

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
 Knowledge of DSHS databases
 Knowledge of community resources for refugees and immigrants
 Experience interacting with all levels of management/staff and across organization lines
 Experience presenting to different audiences verbally and in writing
 Experience working with detailed information and presenting in a way that is easily understood by individuals at different levels within the communities PIE serves
 Ability to multi-task
