Volunteer: Friendly Visitor Program

The Friendly Visitor program provides outreach to adults who are isolated due to age or disability. This outreach program provides socialization and helps to monitor the client’s needs. 

At this time, JFS is most especially in need of Russian speakers for this opportunity. If you do not speak Russian, that's OK. There may still be opportunities. 

The Friendly Visitor helps Jewish Family Service to ensure the strength and survival of the most vulnerable in our community. 

Responsibilities:

Actively listen, engage and talk with the client. Other potential duties, depending on the client’s needs and the volunteer's abilities, include running errands, shopping, cooking, transportation, gardening, and assistance with various household chores. Identify and inform JFS staff of any client needs.

Hours:

A commitment of at least 6 months. Spend one to two hours at each visit, with a minimum of two visits per month.

Requirements:

Interest in working with older adults or individuals with disabilities. Reliable, patient and able to engage in active listening. Able to set limits (i.e., if client wants more of you than seems appropriate or more than you want or are able to give.) An understanding of Jewish culture recommended but not required. Participation in Friendly Visitor Volunteer Training (approximately two hours). Monthly contact with JFS staff to give status updates and report hours. Successful completion of application process, including Washington State Patrol and other background and reference checks.  Volunteers must be 18 years or older. Ability to travel to client. (The client will be in the Seattle metro area.)

JFS's Refugee and Immigrant Services (RIS), with branches in Bellevue and Kent, and the Food Bank at JFS's Capitol Hill campus are seeking Russian- language speakers to help us communicate with our Russian-speaking clients for cultural orientation, event scheduling, client surveys, etc.

Here are some possible volunteer opportunities for a speaker of Russian:

The Food Bank in Capitol Hill can sometimes use help from a Russian speaker to communicate with clients or, if you can read handwritten Russian, to process occasional surveys Friendly Visitor program: there is often need for volunteers to make home visits to Russian-speaking seniors. This is the program with the greatest need for Russian speakers. Please, if you are a Russian speaker, consider this volunteer opportunity:  JFS Friendly Visitor opportunity listing Drivers for Russian-speaking seniors are sometimes needed for rides to doctor appointments, the pharmacy, the grocery, etc. If you have a car and are an insured driver, please consider helping out. (Sorry, there is no mileage reimbursement for volunteer drivers.) There may be additional needs for Russian-speaking volunteers in the Seattle area, either occasional or recurring opportunities.

Volunteers should be reasonably fluent in both Russian and English in order to act as interpreters for Russian-speaking clients with limited English.

The Polack Food Bank On Capitol Hill operates a home-delivery program, providing healthy food and toiletries once a month to clients unable to come to the Food Bank.

Volunteers will prepare, load and deliver needed items to client homes on a designated route. A personal vehicle is required for this position.

This is an opportunity with some flexibility, and it's also a great opportunity for families!

 

Shifts:

Monday to Friday, except during Food Bank's regular open hours for clients, which are: Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. – noon Thursdays, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Fridays, 10:00 a.m. – noon. Second and fourth Sundays of each month.

 

Responsibilities:

Pick up deliveries in the Polack Food Bank at the Capitol Hill Campus. Give the client or caseworker at least two days’ notice before delivering. Deliver groceries at your convenience, except during Jewish holidays. Complete necessary paperwork for each pickup. Follow contractual agreement as outlined in “Procedure for Home Delivery Food Bank.”

 

Requirements:

Age 18 or older, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Current Washington State driver’s license and vehicle insurance. Reliability and punctuality. Ability to lift 25 pounds. Ability to set and politely convey appropriate boundaries. Work cooperatively with JFS staff and volunteers. Culturally sensitive, respectful to clients and the mission of JFS. Successful completion of application process, including background and reference checks.
