Volunteer: Communities In Schools of WA -- State Board of Directors

Ready to bring your leadership and support to serve on a Board of Directors of a state-wide non-profit with high growth potential? 

State Board Members Wanted!  Communities In Schools of Washington State (CISWA) is part of the nation’s largest dropout prevention program providing school-based Integrated Student Supports to children and youth most at risk of school failure. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The Communities In Schools of Washington State Office (CISWA) is committed to providing support to local affiliate programs serving children in communities across Washington.  Our statewide network currently serves 14 communities across Washington in 28 school districts – including the four largest and two other districts in the top ten. 

We’re ready to bring on a few new members to our Board of Directors team. Below you’ll find information on our board responsibilities and time commitments.

 

Board Member Responsibilities

Our board members are responsible for governing the State Office as well as developing resources and offering support of its work across Washington State. Duties include:

Understand and endorse the mission, vision, goals and activities of the state office. Monitor the fiscal health and financial sustainability of the agency. Help ensure operational excellence and high ethical standards. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive board issues/discussions and adhere to the organization’s conflict of interest policies.  Support resource development by making an annual personal donation to the agency.  Participate in board fundraising activities including donor development/solicitation and fund/friend raising events. Identify potential resource development opportunities, events and activities to ensure adequate funds are available to maintain operations. Strive to attend all board meetings, in person or virtually.  Participate in board work through involvement on a board committee, task force, or other ad-hoc support activities (e.g.-advocacy, resource development).  Share professional and technical skills with the board and staff as appropriate. Promote a strong Washington State network internally through affiliate relationship building, and externally through strategic outreach and collaboration building. Give fully and enthusiastically of time, resources and expertise.

 

Time Commitment

Board term -- 3 years, renewable Board meetings -- held six times per year, typically 2-2.5 hrs/each, September-June, located within Greater Seattle area Annual Fundraiser/Friendraiser Events -- typically 1-2/year Committee Meetings (optional, but encouraged) -- meeting times and durations vary; current committees are Board Development, Finance, Resource Development, and Executive Committee Other --  new board member orientation, optional site visits

 

 

Bonus “Wish List” Attributes We’re Recruiting For (not required)

We’re always interested to connect with potential board member candidates who have a passion for our mission and the work of our State Office, AND who can fulfill our board member responsibilities. We’d also consider it a bonus if you had one or more of our priority wish list attributes:

Resource Development interest or capacity  (e.g.-fundraising or related business development skills, access to networks of business donors, high net worth individuals, foundations, or other funding resources) Experience with network/federated non-profit boards, agencies or organizations Affiliations with networks across the state, especially Eastern Washington Backgrounds in Human Resources, Marketing, Public Relations, Legal, or Finance Represent or have close affiliations with diverse populations or communities.

Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s #1 model for delivering Integrated Student Supports. The key to our mission is to implement our model of site coordination delivering Integrated Student Supports aimed at removing barriers, both social and academic, for students who are at high risk of dropping out. Our unique model places trained site coordinators inside schools to identify at-risk students. Working with school leaders and community partners, the site coordinator provides services and supports through two levels. One level focuses on school-wide needs and the second level provides individual case management supports to address the needs of high-risk students. Our site coordinators help link existing services to students for their identified needs. CIS recruits and trains hundreds of community volunteers each year to work as mentors, speakers and tutors who provide consistent adult guidance, life skills modeling, academic assistance and set the expectation for success in school and in life. Across Washington, more than 73,000 students were served by Communities In Schools Affiliates last year.
