The final deliverable will be a clear, well-organized document that includes:

A summary of Gates Foundation funding priorities relevant to WAWAC

A checklist of organizational readiness requirements

Recommendations for strengthening our data, evaluation, and storytelling

A narrative framework we can use when drafting the application

A list of documents, metrics, and evidence we should gather

A step-by-step preparation timeline

Any gaps we need to address before applying

Ideal Volunteer

You’ll thrive in this role if you have:

Experience with grant writing, grant readiness, or nonprofit strategy

Familiarity with large philanthropic funders (Gates Foundation experience is a plus)

Strong writing, research, and document-creation skills

Ability to translate complex requirements into clear, actionable guidance

A passion for supporting immigrant and refugee communities

Why This Matters

This project will directly strengthen WAWAC’s ability to secure transformational funding that expands food access, community support, and culturally responsive services for thousands of West African families in Washington State.

Your expertise will help us take a major step toward long-term sustainability and impact.

Volunteer: Disasters harm families. Can you help?

Every day, the American Red Cross sees the heartbreak of people trying to cope with more intense storms, heavier rainfall, higher temperatures, stronger hurricanes and more devastating wildfires.

As more people rely on the Red Cross for help, the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater.

Volunteers help comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to fires, storms and other emergencies, so they don’t have to face tough times alone. Join us and turn your compassion into action by becoming a volunteer today. We are actively recruiting for these critical volunteer roles:

Shelter Support Team: During large disasters, you can support the day-to-day activities within a shelter which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Free online training will be provided. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required.

Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice.

Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. We supply all the training you need.

Volunteer: Community Meal Program

Help feed the women who call Jubilee Women's Center home! In this moment when the cost of food keeps rising and SNAP benefits are shrinking, Monday Melas have become one way we meet the women who call Jubilee home exactly where they are. Many of our residents are balancing full course loads, multiple jobs, and long commutes. They are doing everything they can to build stability, yet the hours between classes and shifts do not leave much space for grocery trips or waiting in food bank lines. Having a fresh, ready meal to come home to at the start of the week helps ease that load. Leftovers can stretch into lunches or quick dinners later in the week, offering both nourishment and a sense of calm in the middle of so much uncertainty.

If you enjoy cooking and want to share your skills, sign up to prepare and drop off a community meal. Your support helps ease the daily load for the women who are working hard everyday to rebuild stability in their lives.

Volunteer: Marra Farm Giving Garden Work Party (Group)

Do you want to end hunger in your community?

Imagine a city where people have equal access to healthy and culturally appropriate food. The Community Food Education (CFE) at Solid Ground fosters community connections through gardening education, sustainable food production, environmental stewardship, and raising awareness about good nutrition and food justice. We also fight hunger by providing low-income individuals with seeds and materials, and supporting backyard gardeners in donating fruits and vegetables grown in King County.

If you share our vision, join us at Marra Farm Giving Garden in Seattle's South Park neighborhood! A Giving Garden Work Party offers an idyllic outdoor opportunity to bond with your coworkers. Dig into soil, plant, weed, and harvest much-needed fresh food for our neighbors as you connect with your team. With the rising cost of food, our local communities rely on fresh produce from Marra Farm more than ever. Help us grow healthy and culturally appropriate food for our neighbors in need!

Time Commitment

Help us kick off the growing season in March and April, or support us during the highest need months of July through September. We’ve already set aside most Tuesdays from 9am to 2pm during the growing season for large-group work parties, preferably with 20 or more volunteers. We encourage you to sign up for a full shift, but we ask for a minimum of three hours. Teams can consist of coworkers, community or church group members, or neighbors. All are welcome!

To Apply

Please click the Respond button below. We will get back to you within 3-5 business days with next steps.

BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), and people with the lived experience of food insecurity are strongly encouraged to volunteer.

Volunteer: Got love to share? Foster kittens! ... or a cat!

Got love to share? Consider becoming a foster volunteer!

As a foster volunteer, you would make a short-term commitment to nurture one or more animals from the shelter in your home on a temporary basis.

Some cats need a break from living at the shelter.  Providing time in your home helps them get ready to be adopted. Many cats need a quiet patch of sunlight to recover from a cold, for example.

RASKC also offers kittens, rabbits, and dogs to foster too.

Are you in a position to help?

Among the animals that are eligible to be fostered, you choose which animal that will go home with you.

Foster volunteers are given training online and 1:1, great support and everything necessary-- free pet food, free medical care for the kitty, free litter, free litter box, free kennel...

When the pet is ready to be adopted, you may choose to:

   a) adopt to a member of the community through RASKC's Adopters Welcome program, or

   b) bring the animal back to the shelter, or

   c) adopt the animal yourself.

You can decide when the time is right for you to foster-- on an ongoing basis or just every once in a while.

Children may participate in the animal care, though an adult in the household must be the official volunteer.

Community service might be available for school (if okay with the school). Usually 1.5 hours is credited for each day an animal is cared for in your home.

1. Complete a RASKC volunteer application.

2. Go to RASKC's website. View the training videos- Modules 1, 2, & 4 - then answer the questions.

3. Submit your completed liability-release form if you are an adult. If you are a youth, the form would need to be completed by your parent/ legal guardian.

Share your love and have fun as a foster parent to sweet fur-baby that needs you.

Thanks for considering this possibility. RASKC looks forward to hearing from you...

Our shared spaces, such as our food forest, rain gardens, pollinator berms, and restoration areas need a lot of love and attention to stay healthy, productive, and beautiful. Volunteers help to ensure this shared site stays maintained and safe for gardeners to continue grow and nature to thrive.

We are looking for work, church, or other community organizations that have availability to bring a group of volunteers out to support with essential gardening and maintenance tasks! We are able to accommodate most events during the week with some limited capacity to schedule Saturday events. If you are interested, please sign up for this volunteer opportunity and we will follow up within 1-2 weeks to gather more details on your availability and interest.

Note: we request a commitment of a minimum of 10-15 volunteers to schedule an event for your organization. Don’t have this many volunteers? Check out our website's Events page to see if there are already scheduled events you can join or email the Community Garden Coordinator to inquire further.

Our Mission: We remove barriers to health with relentless compassion so that no one faces illness and injustice alone.

Lifelong was founded by volunteers in the '80s in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, delivering meals to folks with HIV. Lifelong has expanded since then and merged with the Northwest AIDS Alliance and Evergreen Health, and we now serve individuals with a wide range of chronic medical conditions including cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease, as well as seniors and folks with disabilities. We deliver medically tailored meals and culturally relevant grocery bags to people's homes primarily in King and Snohomish counties.

Volunteer: Board Opportunity

The Neighborhood Farmers Markets (NFM) is on a mission to support and strengthen Washington's small farms and producers by creating and operating vibrant, successful neighborhood farmers markets. Our seven markets serve over 165 producers, from vegetable growers and orchardists to tribal fishing families and cider makers. In 2023, they enabled more than $14.5 million in local, sustainably-produced food sales to Seattle residents. The Board is actively working to recruit 2 to 3 new board members this Spring, as well as non-voting committee members to support the mission of NFM and the market community. Standing board committees with non-voting members include Executive, Finance, Vendor and Fundraising. We are looking for board members who possess:

• A passion for Washington state producers and our regional food system

• Prior nonprofit board experience

• Experience in any of following areas: fundraising, board development and governance, finance, small business development, food systems or food retail, community organizing, or real estate

Tell us more about you! Submit your interest, or nominate someone you know, by filling out our Expression of Interest form.

Board Responsibilities: The NFM Board of Directors provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance and sets policies to ensure the organization is run effectively, legally, and ethically. The Executive Director is responsible for recommending and implementing policies and programs, managing the organization and staff, and steering short-term goals. The NFM Board has a fiduciary responsibility and approves long-range goals for its growth and expansion, approves the annual budget, evaluates the Executive Director, ensures adequate funds to support programs, and ensures that funds are spent responsibly.

Board Members should be willing and able to:

• Commit to a 2-year board term with the intention to stay for 6 years

• Attend all board meetings, plus events and engagement opportunities in the markets throughout the year

• Review the agenda and all supporting materials prior to meetings • Be informed about the NFM mission, policies, and programs

• Make NFM part of their giving plan or secure support for the organization that reflects that priority

• Actively serve on one of the committees such as Vendor (limited to farmers), Marketing & Development, Finance or Executive.

• Participate in annual recruiting efforts to ensure the future leadership of NFM

• Approve the annual budget and assess the financial health and performance of the organization

• Evaluate the success of NFM in meeting its mission

• Serve as a link between the NFM and the community by serving as an ambassador for the organization and its mission

• Follow conflict of interest, ethics, and confidentiality guidelines

• Farmer Board Representatives additionally approve all requests to the Good Farmer Fund and Market polices

Philanthropic Commitment: We believe the source of our commitment begins within those who are closest to the work, including the staff and board. In order to credibly solicit contributions from foundations or individuals, NFM expects board members to make a personal contribution to the organization and recognizes a wide range of opportunities to do so. Examples of contributions that are meaningful to the organization include

1) contributing to board matching pledges during our annual giving campaigns

2) procuring and donating inkind items for fundraising efforts

3) a financial gift that is personally significant.

Board members are also expected to cultivate support through their networks such as participation in community events, shopping at the markets, or recommending potential sponsors or donors. Benefits: The NFM Board of Directors offers a chance to serve your community by ensuring the future of the Neighborhood Farmers Markets in Seattle! In addition, serving on the board provides leadership and professional growth opportunities, exposure to our regional food system, and a personal connection to the work and people of FNM. New board members participate in an onboarding process that includes training sessions on nonprofit board operations, NFM operations and programs, finances and financial statements, and, of course, the farmers markets!

Volunteer: Monthly Meals at Plymouth Housing!

Plymouth Housing owns and operates 17 permanent supportive housing units throughout downtown and surrounding neighborhoods, serving 1,400 people a year. We are looking for groups of committed volunteers to provide meal service in our buildings. This is a great opportunity to directly serve our residents and address a large need for the community.

We ask that volunteer groups provide food and necessary materials (plates, cutlery, napkins, cups, etc.) for 50 servings. Many of our buildings have large community kitchens for food preparations in house, but we also encourage volunteers to consider ready to heat meals from home. We ask that you avoid major allergens such as nuts and seafood. We are able to accommodate any meal any day of the week. Groups should be no greater than 12 and no smaller than 4.

Average volunteer shifts last 2-3 hours including cleaning and prep time. Each shift would be under coordinator or case management supervision.

Volunteer: Volunteer for White Center Food Bank

Seattle Food Committee works with 27 food banks and pantries within the City of Seattle. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are working together to support our community and continue our work in the struggle against hunger.

Interested in food justice? Volunteers know what goes on behind the scenes at the White Center Food Bank, and are critical to ensuring that our community is able to access the food they need. We are currently seeking volunteers for a variety of roles, and our need is high.

Grocery Rescue: Rescue food from grocery stores to provide diverse food options for customers as they shop at the food bank. Hours are Monday through Friday 9-11:30am Arms of Steel Team (Warehouse Support): Volunteers who want to be more active and build some muscle can help us keep our warehouse organized, and assist with large donations of bulk items (either receiving or going out!). Shifts available Monday 12-4pm, Tuesday 10am-3pm (highest need!), or Weds-Friday 10am-2pm. Grocery Store Clerks: Come for a regular shift and get to know our regular customers! Volunteers will welcome and chat with customers face to face as they shop for groceries, help customers find what they’re looking for, and will ensure our grocery store is well stocked throughout the day. Shifts available Mondays 12-4 (highest need!), or Weds-Friday 10am-2pm On Call Rockstars: Volunteers with wacky schedules needed! Have weekday availability that’s changing every week, but still want to volunteer? Join our pool of substitutes that are “on call” when extra help is needed in the food bank. We may know availability to help out a week or two in advance, but we also may call you as soon as the day of support that’s needed.Event Outreach: Table at local events on weekends or weeknights to do outreach or support food bank sponsored events as an event support volunteer. Volunteers in these roles tend to love talking with strangers about the food bank or love the logistics that go into organizing a community event. This team helps the food bank expand our outreach efforts to a wider community, ensuring more people know about us to seek food resources or to donate or volunteer their time.

As an essential service, food banks have been open the entire pandemic and greatly need your support as National Guard support on site ends in July 2021.

Thank you for your interest in helping our community! We hope to hear from you!

Volunteer: Food Drive Hosts for the YWCA

The YWCA Central Food Bank currently serves 300+ food-insecure households in Central & South Seattle. Every Wednesday, 80+ volunteers pack and distribute over 6,000 lbs. of food. Food requests have increased and we have a waitlist of families who need help. Much of our food comes from institutional and government donors like Food Lifeline, NW Harvest and the USDA. We also rely heavily on our community for assistance – for both food and volunteers.

Volunteers who would like to host a food drive will connect with their communities for donations, collect and deliver the donations to the food bank. This is a great opportunity for school, work, church, and other groups.

Most needed:
• $25 and $50 gift cards to Safeway, QFC/Kroger, or Grocery Outlet. Gift cards empower families to purchase culturally appropriate food and items they need
• Canned soups, stews, and chili – vegetarian and meaty, pop-tops/pull tabs are best
• White rice (uncooked)
• Tuna and canned chicken
• Baby formula and baby food
• Diapers (size 5 and 6) and baby wipes
• Cash donations – used to buy protein, eggs, dairy, staples and high demand food items. Please contact us to make a cash/check donation.

Always useful:
• Top ramen – meat and vegetarian
• Pasta and pasta sauce
• Crackers – saltine/Ritz wrapped ‘packs’
• Peanut butter
• Jam, jelly, syrup, and honey
• Ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise
• Cooking oil
• Soy sauce, family sized bottles
• Salt and pepper sets
• Sugar
• Seasoning, spices and herbs
• Kid friendly snacks – raisins, fruit chews, granola/breakfast bars, nuts
• Ground caffeinated coffee
• Simple, inexpensive can openers
• Cleaning supplies – dish and laundry soap, all-purpose cleaner, sponges, mops and brooms
• Toiletries – full-sized* shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste (*hotel/travel sized toiletries can be triggering for clients who have been victims of sex trafficking)

What are the items the YWCA cannot accept?
• Any open food containers – where the seal has been broken or food has been partially consumed
• Expired food items
• Home prepared food, including jams, jellies and pickled foods
• Leftovers / open containers of home prepared food

Volunteer: Be a Grocery Rescue driver!

North Helpline's food levels depend on daily grocery rescue runs with partnered stores! In order to retrieve and sort this food to prepare for distribution, we need drivers to make runs for us in the morning. Drivers can use their own vehicles, or one among our fleet of North Helpline-branded vehicles, and we provide training for making the pickup.

Grocery Rescue is a weekly volunteer position that requires some training and a long-term commitment. Additionally, volunteers are required to have a valid driver's license, pass a background check, be comfortable lifting heavy boxes upwards of 30 lbs, and have some availability on a particular weekday morning between 8-11am.

Interested in working with us? Click the "Respond" button and we will follow up with you. We hope to hear from you soon!

Volunteer: Be a Home Delivery Food Box Packing specialist!

Help ensure food security for your neighbors by volunteering with North Helpline's food bank in Lake City!

Some neighbors do not have the ability or connections necessary to shop for themselves at our weekly food distributions. To counter these barriers, North Helpline provides home delivery to homebound individuals every other week on Tuesday and Thursday.

We pack on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9:30am-1:30pm with dietary needs and restrictions in mind. Because of this and the particular needs of some neighbors, attention to detail is a key attribute needed to help pack these boxes. Dietary knowledge for needs such as diabetes, gluten intolerance, and food allergies, as well as the ability to lift up to 30 pounds is also a plus.

Interested in working with us? Click the "Respond" button and we will follow up with you. We hope to hear from you soon!

A couple extra points: We require all volunteers scheduled to work on-site to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and present proof of vaccination before they start their shift. If you have questions regarding this, feel free to email or message us.  Please wear season-appropriate clothing as our warehouse is not a climate-controlled environment. Closed-toe shoes are required.

Volunteer: Join the Board of Directors of Hunger Intervention Program (HIP)

Are you passionate about increasing access to food resources in our communities?

Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) is an award-winning organization that is changing the lives of children, families, seniors, and unhoused neighbors by increasing food security through nutritious meals, community food education programs, and advocacy. Join the Board of Directors of HIP and provide strategic leadership to this dynamic organization.

HIP's meal programs provide vital meals to our neighbors, young and old, through programs like our Healthy HIP Packs, Summer Meals, Shelter Meals, and Senior Community Meals. We offer various nutrition education classes, activities, gardening programs, food justice workshops, and cooking demonstrations for children, adults, and families throughout the year. HIP also actively participates in several different coalitions to advocate for food justice issues, locally and nationally.

What is the board’s role at HIP?

The HIP board is a governing board, providing oversight and leadership to the organization. It makes sure the best interests of the community are represented and funds are stewarded in support of the mission.

Board members are expected to participate in a monthly board meeting, serve on board committees, and/or hold an officer position as needed, and support fundraising efforts through personally significant annual gifts, connecting to other giving opportunities, and helping at HIP events and outreach.

Who would be our ideal Board candidate?

We value a Board of Directors as diverse as the community we serve and give special consideration to people who have a lived experience of food insecurity. We are specifically looking for people with expertise in one/more of these areas: poverty alleviation, agriculture, farm labor, food systems, social work, community organizing, advocacy, youth services, or senior services; skills in the area of fundraising, law, human resources, non-profit governance, or data & program evaluation. All our Board members are passionate about food justice, understand the importance of working with a racial equity lens, and value continued learning that influences our work. People of color, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2+ folks are strongly encouraged to apply.
