Volunteer: Mentor a Teen & Join a Community!

Are you a compassionate professional looking to make a lasting impact, get involved in your community, and broaden your horizons? Community for Youth (CfY) is actively seeking mentors like you to join our transformative mentorship program. CfY inspires and supports our high school students to be their best selves through mentorship, learning experiences, and a powerful community.

At CfY, we believe in the power of connection and community. As a mentor, you'll not only act as a valuable resource for students, but also create a safe space where they can bring their best selves. CfY values student voice and choice, meeting students where they are and seeing them as capable, resilient, and powerful.

CfY offers two programs, to better fit the needs and schedules of our participants.

Learning Community

The traditional CfY Learning Community offers 1:1 mentorship, small group mentorship, and whole community mentorship. Mentors in the Learning Community will:

be paired 1:1 with a student and meet once a month

join a “Family Group” of 3-4 other mentoring pairs and meet once a month

attend whole Community Workshops once a month

attend Mentor training Workshops once a quarter

Duos

Our flexible Duos program focuses on the 1:1 relationship based upon your own schedules. Duos participants commit to meeting twice a month with their match from January - June.
We highly encourage new community members to consider enrolling in the traditional Learning Community program, to experience the power of community and explore different aspects and methods of mentorship.

Eligibility requirements:

Be at least 21 years of age

Reside in the greater Puget Sound region

Be willing to adhere to all Community for Youth program policies and procedures and follow the CfY Code of Conduct

Have never been accused, arrested, charged, or convicted of child abuse or molestation

Not currently be in treatment for substance abuse. If a substance abuse problem has occurred in the past, the applicant must have completed a non-addictive period of at least five years

Be vaccinated against COVID-19 and follow CfY guidelines regarding masks and safety

Being a CFY mentor is rewarding, challenging, and fun! You’ll not only provide critical support for an inquisitive, driven young person, but you’ll also build a strong network with fellow mentors.

Let's come together to build a community where students can thrive, explore their true selves, and unlock their full potential. Join us at Community for Youth and be the mentor who creates lasting change.

Volunteer: Continuing Education Instructor in need of Assistant

Education Is a Key to Success, Continuing Education Instructor In Need Of Assistants

DESC has assisted hundreds of individuals obtain employment as their primary path out of homelessness and toward greater stability through two distinct programs: Supported Employment Program and continuing education classes. This program has been a great success, so much so it's more than one person can handle alone.

Below is a description of the continuing education program offered to DESC clients and the commitment needed from a volunteer assistant.

1. The class is for a wide range of abilities. Most students enter at very basic levels. This is not an ESL class but some non-native speakers, with no better options available, have spent time in the class and have coped well.

2. Clients join for a wide range of reasons including using time productively, self-improvement, gaining employment skills, gaining a GED or preparing for college interest admission tests.

3. Students do not need to commit to an attendance level.

4. Classes are free.

5. Monday and Tuesday from 8:30am-10:30am at the DESC's Gateway in Honor of Tenaya Wright.

We are still requiring masks in all client areas so masking is required for this particular volunteer opportunity. Must be vaccinated for Covid-19 or have a compelling reason not to be.

This position has limited interaction with clients and is more organizational in nature.  This opportunity is at our 216 James Clinic and the Lew Middleton Drop In Center in downtown Seattle.  The Lew Middleton Drop-In Center was started by Washington state’s longest-standing Certified Peer Counselor, Lew Middleton Jr. Since 1994, the center is and continuously aims to be a safe space for an incredibly special and diverse population. The center is staffed and operated by a team of Certified Peer Specialists, who receive intensive clinical training in order to best serve the community and provide recovery-oriented services.

Many of those we serve, have low to no income so these supplies are essential at ensuring their well being. This volunteer role would be responsible for maintaining the organization of these supplies so that they are easily accessible, as well as communicating any needs when supplies are low or out. Frequency in most cases would be weekly and schedule is flexible depending on volunteer schedule and location needs/abilities.

All volunteers must be fully vaccinated against COVID and adhere to any required safety guidelines. Submission of proof of vaccination is required and masking is still mandatory in our locations. Must be over 18 and complete a background check. We ask for a commitment of at least 6 months.

Upon arriving to each shift, your Volunteer Supervisor or other staff will ask you questions listed on the ROOTS COVID-19 screening guide and will take your temperature. Please dress in warm layers and wear close toed shoes. Volunteers must be able to stand for the full session. Light lifting and some bending may be required. We’re counting on your help to get food out to people who really need it! Please plan to arrive early and stay for the entire volunteer session.

Volunteer: Volunteer at Day Center Serving People Experiencing Homelessness

God’s Li’l Acre Day Center offers laundry, showers, hygiene supplies, companionship & community, a clothing closet, storage, mailing address, food, and a community kitchen. It also offers a space to just "be" for folks who otherwise don't have one.

We are committed to maintaining this vital resource for our community members experiencing homelessness throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteers at GLA help around the space in a variety of ways - distributing bus tickets, cleaning, sanitizing, organizing donations, or simply being present and listening. Successful GLA volunteers are flexible, personable, and great at taking initiative.

GLA is a trauma-informed, peaceful space for people experiencing homelessness to relax and recharge amid a chaotic environment on the street. Volunteers and staff at GLA seek to affirm the creativity, resiliency, generosity, skills, assets, and giftedness of each person.

Our hours are Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm.
Women’s Spa Days are on Tuesdays, 1-4 pm - female-identifying guests and volunteers only for this time, please.

Precautions we are taking to maintain safety of staff, guests, and volunteers include:

- Limiting the number of guests to 15 max at any given time- Closing the space for cleaning/sanitizing between shifts- Temps and symptom checks upon entry- handwashing required upon entry- Masks required when not seated at a table to eat/drink- HEPA air filters on site - PPE provided

Volunteer: Front Yard Concert Performer

Musicians & performers wanted! Please join us in building community, one mini-concert at a time, by joining our team of outdoor musicians and performers.  Our vision is for each mini-concert to be 10 to 20-ish minutes long (you can decide the length of time) in the front yard, driveway or other appropriately-distanced outdoor location from one of our neighbor’s front door. Performers must provide their own equipment, including a chair, if needed, and transportation. Audience members should wear a mask throughout the experience, and performers should distance at least 10 feet.

We will match performers with concert hosts, and you will decide on a mutually agreeable date and time together.  Locations are generally in North-Northwest Seattle.

Our performers last year loved being in front a live – albeit small – audience.

Volunteer: Sew Face Masks for Lafayette Elementary PTA

Lafayette PTA is in need of 2 layer cloth face masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 among our STAFF/STUDENTS who will begin in-person learning on April 5th.  The school district has provided cloth face masks but these are too large for our young learners.  The PTA has purchased disposable face masks but ideally we would like to provide reusable cloth face masks for students who need them for in-person learning. Please read this page for more information about sewing face masks.

We are requesting 20 masks for children in grades K through 5th grade. If you’re able to provide some or all of these masks, please click “respond” and we will reach out to you to confirm the number of masks you can provide and delivery details. We ask that each volunteer responding to this request plan to make at least 5 masks.

Finished masks can be delivered to us on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday between 8am-4pm at the front of the school at:

Volunteer: Cook and Package Hot Meals for Homeless Young People

Join us in supporting young people in Seattle's University District! Teen Feed works with the community to offer support to meet basic needs, build strong relationships, and ally with homeless youth as they meet their future off the streets. Teen Feed meets youth nightly with a hot, home-cooked, and nutritious dinner along with access to basic needs and caring adults. Street Outreach teams meet young people where they're at, providing resources and access to youth-centered case management.

Since COVID, Teen Feed has transitioned to hot to-go meal service. Volunteers will help cook or package hot meals in our kitchen, which will be distributed to young people by trained staff. Dinner volunteer opportunities available in the University District from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

**Some safety considerations: We are asking that at this time anyone who may fall into a high-risk category does not participate in person at dinner. Please reach out if you need further clarification on what "high risk" might look like. Additionally - we are working to limit our in-person teams to no more than 3 or 4 individuals at a time in order to comply with social distancing. Face masks required at all times, do *not* come in person if you are feeling unwell or have any symptoms of illness.

The minimum age is 15, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian until age 18.

Click "respond" and we will follow up with you to schedule a shift!

Volunteer: Alpha Supported Living Services is asking for In-kind donations to keep our clients and staff safe in their homes

Right now, our main challenge is finding the necessary personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies and other supplies necessary to serve our clients and the staff in their homes. As people continue to deplete the stock in the stores, we are trying to secure gloves, gowns, masks, goggles, disinfecting wipes and sprays, bleach, hand sanitizer, hand soap, paper towels and other supplies necessary to properly disinfect the homes and provide protection for our staff and the individuals we support. There is a lack of resources, so we are worried that our current supply will not last throughout this crisis.

Unlike other businesses, we can’t follow the recommendations from the CDC and Department of Health and have our staff work from home. Our staff provide 24-7 care in the homes to the individuals we support, so we need to continue to provide staffing in the homes.

Specific items we are in need of currently are:

Hand Sanitizer

Disinfecting Spray

N-95 Masks

Grocery Store Gift Cards for our clients

Our staff have been very creative at finding sources of PPE and other necessary products but when we find them we must act fast. Monetary donations are gladly accepted to go directly to our COVID19 response.

You can mail your donations to:

Alpha Supported Living Services

16030 Juanita Woodinville Way NE

Bothell, WA  98011 or go directly to our website

www.alphasls.org

Our office is closed to visitors and volunteers, please contact Dave Bushnell at dbushnell@alphasls.org if you have any questions in regards to your donation.

Thank you so much for helping us!
