Mercy Housing Northwest

Mercy's values consist of three components, Respect, Justice and Mercy. By ensuring our views align with these values, we can cultivate a sense of belonging and pride within the population we serve.

We provide 3 hours of after-school tutoring to support the youth within our properties. The after-school program runs from 3:00PM-6:00PM. Our properties are low income and heavily diverse. We provide academic support to students who are predisposed of varying ethnic and SES statuses, that are typically underserved within the public education system. Typical days may look different, but students can expect to arrive at 3:00PM and work with a K-5 grade youth on academics for around 30 to 45 minutes. Upon completion of schoolwork, students may interact with the children and create positive lasting relationships to keep learning fun. At 4:30PM, we transition from K-5th grade, to our 6-12 grade youth. Similarly with the younger children, students would spend around 45 minutes working on academics with the youth. Then the remaining time can be spent creating connections and an overall fun learning environment. We will also provide supplemental education materials if a child does not have schoolwork on the given day. Each day is different, we may have one day when the youth are very compliant and motivated. There will be other days when the youth are more hyperactive. This is when building that rapport is essential to creating a successful learning environment. Students can learn to foster exceptional intrapersonal skills, classroom and behavior management, and educational programming while they volunteer within Mercy.
