Who We Are
Heron Habitat Helpers works to help the public enjoy, learn about, and protect great blue herons and their nesting colonies in the greater Puget Sound area. Heron Habitat Helpers (HHH) was established in 2002 as a sub-committee of Friends of Discovery Park. Our 501(c)3 status was secured through affiliation with the Associated Recreation Council of Seattle Parks and Recreation. Since 2002, HHH has helped secure funding to restore habitat in Kiwanis Memorial Preserve Park, home of Seattle?s largest colony of nesting herons for many years. We have led numerous work parties to remove English ivy from trees in the park, and our volunteers have planted and maintained countless trees and shrubs. HHH volunteers have visited schools and community organizations to teach people about the great blue heron. We have lobbied city leaders on behalf of the herons to protect the colony from disturbance and disruption during nesting periods. In 2013 the HHH mission statement was updated to encompass our interest in herons across the Puget Sound region. Ours is a 100% volunteer organization.
What We Do
Heron Habitat Helpers is a group of thoughtful, creative people who share a passion for the iconic great blue heron. Through habitat restoration, community outreach, public education and ongoing advocacy, we work to ensure the great blue heron continues to thrive throughout the Puget Sound region. We do these things because we believe the great blue heron and other wildlife native to this area contributes immeasurably to the unique quality of life we enjoy here in the Pacific Northwest.
