Green Seattle: Friends Of The SW Queen Anne Greenbelt

Mission To restore forest habitat in upper SW Queen Anne Greenbelt by removing invasive species and planting native species. To educate the public on forest restoration and encourage stewardship of our natural areas. This restoration enhances wildlife use, retains native trees that stabilize the slopes, reintroduces natives species lost with development, cleans water and air, provide a buffer between industrial areas and residential area, reduces noise from traffic, boats and trains, and reduces greenhouse gases. History: This organization was started in 2010 by a student at a Native Plant Steward class and a Forest Steward Class. He found a site near his home and with a grant from Umpqua Bank acquired tools and plants, lead occasional work parties, and recruited volunteers. We have removed several acres of invasive ivy and blackberry plants and installed 1,000s of native plants.

Description: The Friends of SW Queen Anne Greenbelt is a volunteer organization supported by Seattle Parks and Recreation, Forterra, and EarthCorps. We hold monthly work parties to restore this area of about 70 acres at one acre at a time. We provide tools, gloves, and training on how to restore the forest. Our goal is to help create a love of the outdoors, Seattle Parks and the natural areas of those parks. We would like to see people use native plants in their landscaping so we can answer many questions on choices that people might have in selecting and caring for the plants they have at home.
