Who We Are

The Basic & Transitional Studies Volunteer Tutoring Program provides individual and small group tutoring opptions for students enrolled in Seattle Central classes (Adult Basic Education, GED, and English as a Second Language classes) so that they can emerge from education with the skills needed to advance closer towards their aspirations, goals, and life needs.

Hello, and thank you for your interest in volunteering as a tutor for adult learners in the Basic and Transitional Studies Tutoring program!

Requirements:

  • Up to 21 y.o.
  • Have an SSN number to complete the background check.

Steps to get Involved:

  1. Fill Out the Form. Begin by completing the application form.
    Option 1 : Interested in tutoring ESL ( English Second Language) students?

    Option 2: Interested in tutoring College Prep (ABE), GED, High School Completion, and Adult (21+) Learners?

  2. Interview Scheduling. A tutoring specialist will reach out to you to schedule an in-person or Zoom interview. During this interview, we will discuss your interests and concerns and share with you our volunteering options. We will discuss specific tutoring times, considering your availability, our schedule, and the needs of the students.
  3. Complete Paperwork. Finish the required volunteer onboarding paperwork and a background check.
  4. Attend an online drop-in orientation session via Zoom. The dates for the New Tutors Orientation will be announced at the end of April 2025.

*The new Quarter will start on September 29 and the first session will most likely start after October 6.

What We Do

We work with students to support them in improving their English, reading, writing, and math skills so that they can reach their goals. Students in our division are working towards attaining education by taking classes in English as Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (Pre-College), and GED Prep!
