Who We Are

Because Bridge Disability Ministries honors the God-given dignity and giftedness of people with disabilities, we build relationships that alleviate isolation and enrich churches and communities. Bridge Disability Ministries was founded in 1987 by Henk Wapstra, an ordained minister, who observed that many of his friends and parishioners living with disabilities were not getting their needs met.

Through the years the ministry has grown to include a Spiritual Connections program of events for people with developmental and/or physical disabilities, a Certified Professional Guardianship Agency serving 60 people with developmental disabilities for whom Bridge is legal guardian, and a the Meyer Medical Equipment Center where donated durable medical equipment of all types are refurbished and provided to people in need.

What We Do

Bridge Disability Ministries serves people living with physical and/or developmental disabilities who live in the greater Seattle area. Many of the people we work with say that it is not their disability but their isolation and marginalization by society which causes them the greater pain.

Through our Volunteer Program we help bridge the gap between our friends living with disabilities and those living in their communities. We do this through volunteers who visit in the home or take them on outings; through small groups gathering around a person with a disability to share their lives and dreams together and by improving accessibility to the community with mobility equipment.  We also enlist volunteers to participate in monthly social events which provide opportunities for social interaction. And we actively reach out to the churches in our communities to welcome people with disabilities, celebrate their gifts and experience the inclusion that enriches the lives of all involved.
