POSITION SUMMARY

Sewing Instructors teach beginning and intermediate machine and hand sewing techniques to participants as part of our life skills programming at the North Seattle Family Resource Center. Instructors work with adults and youth, some who have never sewn before. Instructors prepare simple projects, such as pillow cases, bags, children’s pajamas, placemats etc.  Participants are low income and many are immigrants and refugees. We are looking for volunteers to help these participants acquire new skills and increase their family self-sufficiency.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead classes for those with various knowledge of sewing, including beginners
  • Prepare basic sewing projects for classes
  • Strive to remain compassionate, non-judgmental, flexible, and impartial when assisting people that have lifestyles, spiritual beliefs, and interests that are different from your own.
  • Respect the privacy of children, families, and staff; abide by the Volunteer Program’s confidentiality policies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education and Experience:       

Required:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Available between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday four hours a month
  • Ability to interact with a variety of people. Respect of diverse lifestyles, cultures, religions, and values
  • Must have basic machine sewing skills
  • Knowledge of how to construct simple sewing projects
  • Assist participants through the completion of sewing projects

Preferred:

  • Previous volunteer experience
  • Experience in a children’s welfare or non-profit setting
  • Bi-lingual a plus but not required
  • Knowledge of how to earn extra income through sewing projects

  • Ability to take directions
  • Ability to respect and maintain confidential information
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Dependable, responsible and punctual
  • Recognizes limitations and asks for help when unsure
  • Awareness of cultural competency; sensitivity in working with diverse cultures
