ABOUT THE Basic & Transitional Studies TUTORING PROGRAM

  • The Volunteer Tutoring Program at Basic & Transitional Studies Department (BTS) of Seattle Central College connects volunteers with adult learners from ESL and/or College-Prep,High School Completion Classes. Our volunteers help students with reading, writing, math, computer skills. Our tutors make a huge impact by supporting students' learning & helping them to reach educational and career goals in a friendly, welcoming environment.
The new Quarter will start on September 29.  The first tutoring sessions will most likely start after October 6.

    OUR VOLUNTEERS
Our volunteers have a different tutoring experience & background. To join us you don't need to have a degree in education or teaching experience. The BTS tutors are people from our community who share common values and want to support, guide and encourage adult learners on their way to achieve educational and personal goals.

    TUTORING OPTIONS
  • 1-1: You will meet your assigned students weekly. At least 1 hour per week until the end of the Quarter. You can have more than 1 student or make your tutoring sessions longer or shorter than 1 hour.
  • Small groups drop-in tutoring  (AVAILABLE for EVENINGS in the Fall Quarter) : Drop-in tutoring is a flexible, open-time tutoring session in which students can arrive and leave at any time without an appointment. Tutors can choose what ESL level(s) they'd like to work with and also choose the main focus of the session: speaking practice, vocabulary, grammar time, reading, etc. BTS Tutoring Specialist will provide you with more information during your first meeting.
  • In-class teacher assistant: A teacher assistant supports an ESL (English as a Second Language) by helping students who are just beginning to learn English. This role involves closely working with adult learners in a classroom setting, providing guidance and encouragement as they develop their basic language skills.
    * This option is available only if our teachers made a request for an in-class support.
