Description

The Northwest Railway Museum is seeking dedicated volunteers to join our Train Crew, supporting the operation of historic trains during regular service days and special events throughout the year.

Train Crew volunteers play a critical role in safely operating trains, assisting passengers, and preserving the Museum’s living railroad history. This opportunity is ideal for individuals interested in learning railroad operations in a structured, safety-focused environment.

Train Crew Roles & Progression

Train Crew volunteering follows a progressive qualification system, allowing volunteers to build skills and responsibility over time. New volunteers typically begin in entry-level roles and may advance as training and experience are completed.

Typical progression includes:

  • Conductor’s Assistant (entry-level; no prior experience required) [13+ with parent/guardian]

  • Car Attendant [16+]

  • Switchman* [16+]

  • Diesel Fireman* [18+]

  • Rear Brakeman* [18+]

  • Conductor [21+]

  • Diesel Engineer [21+]

Advancement is based on experience, demonstrated proficiency, adherence to safety rules, and completion of required training. *Certain Train Crew titles reflect historical terminology and are used only in a historical, non-discriminatory context.

Schedule

Train Crew opportunities are available throughout the year during:

  • Regular weekend train operations

  • Special events (Wine Trains, school trains, Day Out With Thomas, Halloween Trains, Santa Trains)

Schedules vary by role and qualification.

Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older (13+ with parent/guardian)

  • Willingness to follow operating rules and safety procedures

  • Ability to work as part of a team and interact with the public

  • Commitment to training and safe operations

No prior railroad experience is required to start as a Conductor’s Assistant.
