Harborview Medical Center conducts an annual decontamination drill to practice decontaminating volunteers posing as patients who have had a simulated hazardous materials exposure. This year’s drill will be held Tuesday, August 13th from 8a-11a.
Volunteers will receive a briefing on how the drill will be conducted the morning of the drill. Volunteers should come prepared to get fully wet as they will be going through decontamination showers to wash off shaving cream that represents the hazardous material. Once they have been washed off, they will be escorted into the emergency department to simulate being triaged and admitted to the hospital. It is recommended to wear tshirt or tank top and shorts, and sandals or flip flops that can get wet, and bring a change of dry clothes and shoes for after the drill. The drill will be held in the street just outside the emergency department entrance and there will be people watching the drill happen.
We always hope for warm weather, but the drill will happen rain or shine. We need about 25 volunteers, must be at least 18 years old.
