Description

Join us in writing letters for FareStart meal recipients! Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, FareStart has vastly expanded our meal production- creating between 5,000-7,000 meals a day for local homeless shelters, non-profits, senior facilities, schools and more.  The recipients of our letters are experiencing low-income, poverty, homelessness and many other factors that make it difficult to find secure and nutritious sources of food. Including letters in our meals helps bring additional joy to our recipients, many of which are high risk and isolated in their facilities due to the pandemic.

About FareStart: At FareStart, we help people overcome barriers to employment by teaching them work and life skills they need to succeed in the foodservice industry — and in life. FareStart transforms lives, disrupts poverty and nourishes communities through food, life skills and job training.

Instructions: Sign up individually or as a team here! This opportunity can be done individually or collaboratively via online meeting software. FareStart will provide an instructional video and other resources to review while you work this MLK Day.

Volunteers will write and decorate notes that will be incorporated into FareStart meals. Once volunteers sign up, please follow THESE INSTRUCTIONS to create your letters. Below are some example images to help guide your creative process. You can start working as soon as you register and you can reach out to volunteer@farestart.org with any questions.

Common Questions, Answered:

How many letters should I write?
There is no minimum or maximum. We make up to 7,000 meals a day and can use as many as you would like to make.

When do you use the letters?
Right away! We incorporate letters as we get them. Please keep the timing in mind when you create content

Do you need envelopes for the letters?
No, these will be added directly into individually packed meals, so envelopes are not necessary. If you are using stationary or would like to use envelopes, go for it!

Can I type the letters, or do they need to be handwritten?
Typing and handwritten both work great.

Get Connected Icon Q: How will you raise awareness of - and reflect on - the role of racial and social justice within the volunteer project?
A: The COVID-19 pandemic has effected us all in various ways but has disproportionally impacted our BIPOC communities, making it difficult to obtain secure employment, healthcare and stable sources of food. FareStart creates between 5,000-7,000 meals a day for the King County Community. Over 90% of our meal recipients are experiencing low-income where 40% are actively or recently experiencing homelessness. By providing safe, stable and nutritious meals to our community, we minimize the impact of the pandemic, one meal at a time. Including letters in our meals helps bring additional joy to our recipients, many of which are high risk and isolated in their facilities due to the pandemic.
Get Connected Icon Q: If this is an in-person project, besides requiring vaccination what COVID-19 safety measures will you have in place?
A: This opportunity is a remote volunteer project. Registered volunteers will work from the comfort of their homes or office spaces and will implement their own COVID-19 safety measures.
