Description

The Children's Center at Burke Gilman Gardens is seeking community volunteers to serve on its Board. This nonprofit childcare center and early learning program provides high quality services to roughly 60 families in north Seattle. TCC is committed to helping children of all backgrounds grow into enthusiastic, kind and confident learners by providing a broad curriculum designed to enhance their social, physical and cognitive development.

As a Board, we make strategic decisions based on our core values of inclusion, safety, respect and quality. TCC has a unique structure as it is associated with the Burke Gilman Place Public Development Authority, which includes the Ronald McDonald House, Provail housing, Burke-Gilman Apartments (subsidized and market-rate housing), and housing under the auspices of the Capitol Hill Housing Improvement Program. Serving on the Board of Directors provides an opportunity to connect with other members of the Seattle education, nonprofit, and business community, build experience with nonprofit boards, and to create meaningful difference in the Northeast Seattle community.

The Board is a group of 3-year-term volunteers who meet monthly to offer strategic vision, financial oversight, and tangible assistance to our Executive Director and program staff.  We operate within the context of the Center’s Mission, Vision and Values. Current Board members represent a broad range of professional experiences. Background or experience that can diversify the perspectives of the Board, or make it more reflective of the community we serve including race, ethnicity, family structure, and household income, are welcomed.

Board members attend monthly 2-hour board meetings (free childcare provided), and contribute to special projects outside of meetings. While the time demands can vary due to unexpected issues, 3 - 6 hours a month is an average commitment (inclusive of meetings). Serving on the Board has no impact on admission or tuition, there is no compensation for board efforts, nor is there development expectation of board members.

Our 2018 focus is on facilities expansion, while continuing to hone our longer-term strategic planning, with ongoing attention paid to engaging TCC staff in our work and providing value and connection to the communities we serve. We continue to refine and improve our systems and structures to support the long-term health of the Center, and proactively care for the facility.

If you are ever interested in attending a Board meeting or volunteering for a term, please click the "respond" button and we'll get in touch with details. We need a wide array of skills and perspectives to do our best work, and would love to hear from you! We’d also appreciate you passing this opportunity to others who might be interested (including those outside the TCC community).

Thank you!
