POSITION SUMMARY
Help people in your community with their conversational English skills. Talk Time provides immigrants and refugees with opportunities to practice conversational English in a social setting. Volunteer facilitators work independently or as a team to plan and facilitate small group discussions on a variety of topics focused on language needed in everyday life. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Strive to remain compassionate, non-judgmental, flexible, and impartial when assisting people that have lifestyles, spiritual beliefs, and interests that are different from your own
- Respect the privacy of children, families, and staff; abide by the Volunteer Program’s confidentiality policies
- Facilitate a 1-1/2 hour session once a week year-round
- Plan and prepare topics to be discussed in small group conversation
- Collect input from Talk Time participants for ideas on
- Attend Talk Time volunteer training
- Maintain accurate attendance and intake
- Report back on a regular basis in meetings to be scheduled with supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education and Experience
Required:
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Available for 1.5 hours per week. Classes are offered 1:30-3 p.m. Thursdays
- Ability to interact with a variety of people. Respect of diverse lifestyles, cultures, religions, and values
Preferred:
- Previous volunteer experience
- Experience in a children’s welfare or nonprofit setting
